Does that mean "2+ underscores, or 2+ hyphens, or 2+ tildes" (i.e. __, --, or ~~), or "an underscore, hyphen, or tilde appearing after another such character" (_-, _~, etc)?

I think, the stuff like 2+ underscores was the original intent. However, the current implementation (the /[_\-~]{2}/ regex) does catch any combination of these.

Why do these aliases exist in the first place? They're empty tags.
