Topic: Anyone Get Annoying Commissioners?

Posted under Art Talk

Does anyone get annoying commissioners, like literally all of the time? I’ve been trying to do ordinary practice sketches for free, because I don’t have a lot of money, and I can’t afford to buy a tablet or professional art equipment. So before I actually purchase those items, I’ve been offering free sketches on Fur Affinity in order to practice my art skills. I’ve given these exact rules: https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/9557315.

Going back to the question: Has anyone had to deal with insufferable requests? For me, it has nothing to do with their preferences, or even their conditions. It’s just the way they message me about it. Sometimes it feels like I’m being talked to by 12 Year olds, and that makes me very uncomfortable. So far, absolutely everyone has disregarded the obvious terms and conditions that I’ve set out. There are literally only 5 rules, and sometimes people want you to write or draw some kind of copy-written content that you know nothing about.

Then their grammar is so bad, you can’t even understand what you’re reading. So then you worry more about wether or not these people are children. The discomfort then intensifies significantly, wracking my nerves in light of the fact that these could just be horny prepubescents. Because of this, and only this, I haven’t filled out a single commission from any of these people.

Is there any information anyone can give me? I’ve ONLY had these specific types of people message me for commissions. Do I have shitty luck? Perhaps there’s something I’m not seeing. Constructive criticism on this topic is encouraged! I’m honestly growing tired of this repeating loop, so if you have any info, please inform me.

When you offer free art on FA is very likely you get these fucking weird people , usually they are the same users that spams artists with weird requests unrelated to the gallery content , and yes, most of these are children.

If you want to practice and give gifts at the same time, probably you should go to artfight, people there submit their ocs they want to be drawn without weird requests.

Thanks! I’ll try and check that site out.

But OMG! Most of them are kids?? I’m so glad I would’ve never given them what they asked for! 😨

Thank you for informing me.

Yup, sadly FA doesn't disable notes/comments to minors, allowing them to have sexual interactions with adults; also that reporting minors in that site is a pain in the ass and its very likely they do nothing. Its so gross.

It's one of the dangers of offering requests. Sure, you can get good requesters who simply lack the funds to commission someone, but more often than not, you'll attract the sorts you've encountered whose problems extend beyond a lack of money and skill. Perhaps the simplest way to get around this is to refuse service to those who don't read your TOS and can't keep from being obnoxious. After all, a request is essentially a gift and isn't something the artist is obligated to give. But be prepared for them pitching nasty hissy fits because they're not getting their way.

That sounds like a huge legal problem....

Most websites just ask users to click a button, check a box, or enter a birth date to claim they are above 13, 18, or 21. With no actual verification in place, minors will just lie.

If FA allows minors who are truthful about their age to visit NSFW pages, maybe there is a problem there.

One of many reasons why I stopped doing requests. If you’re offering requests, you’re sometimes going to encounter ungrateful freeloaders or minors that want you to do overly-complex requests and will treat you badly throughout the process. Not everyone is gonna be like that, but you have a higher chance of getting those peeps when you offer something for free.

Plus there are an infinite number of ideas available if you just want to do practice sketches. Just look around on FA or e621 instead.

This is why I stopped taking and asking for requests. Therefore, I needed to do commissions and receive a commission from someone else as long it might be with money or even free.

I know, but the problem with that is the motivation for practice. When people tell me to do something, I feel more of an obligation to get it done. It’s kinda like not being able to exercise unless one of those personal trainers makes you do it.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy making the art. I just have ADHD.

To be honest I personally think that requests are not worth the trouble, as a few years ago I used to take on NSFW requests under a different account (forgot the username for the account) and I remember it been an absolute pain in my ass. In the end I quit the old account as it wasn't enjoyable anymore, as dealing with avalanche of requests as well as the odd few who would constantly bug me just wasn't worth it.
So if I had to give you some advice, if your going to continue taking on requests, give yourself some option to be able to drop their request if your not comftorble with it after taking it on (as remember, requests are for free and you technically have no obligation to complete it), also in regards to people who don't read the ToC before hand or whose requests your just not interested in, I would advise to set up a notepad document with a prefabricated response/s, that way you don't have to spend too much time dealing with those notes.
Also I don't think you have shitty luck, as I remember getting a few notes with bootleg english, it's just one of the negatives of requests.
