Topic: [REJECTED] Tag alias: facing_viewer -> front_view

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The tag alias #52372 facing_viewer -> front_view has been rejected.

Reason: There are almost three hundred results for facing_viewer, though it refers to exactly the same thing as front_view.

EDIT: The tag alias facing_viewer -> front_view (forum #313504) has been rejected by @Millcore.

facing_viewer, but not front_view.

I'd argue that's looking_at_viewer and looking_back, but not facing_viewer. Going with Wiktionary, it seems that to face something (like a viewer) means your front side is pointed at them instead of you looking over your shoulder, looking up at them, or looking down at them.

1. (transitive, of a person or animal) To position oneself or itself so as to have one's face closest to (something).
2. (transitive, of an object) To have its front closest to, or in the direction of (something else).
3. (transitive) To cause (something) to turn or present a face or front, as in a particular direction.
...

I agree with Clawstripe that it shouldn't have been tagged with facing_viewer to begin with, but I'm still not sure it's not going to introduce a ton of tagging errors. Though it is definitely a tag that is not needed as it's already represented by other tags - front_view looking_at_viewer for example.

Might be good to instead invalidate and manually replace with front_view, looking_at_viewer, looking_back_at_viewer, etc. With less than 300 usage I could have it done in 2 hours, with the main factor being the tag edit limit

This is a good point. I’ll try invalidating it instead. Should that be done as an alias or an implication?

It needs to be done as a BUR changing its category to Invalid.

The bulk update request #1106 has been rejected.

change category facing_viewer (0) -> invalid

Reason: The tag has been used almost 300 times, though it seems too ambiguous. Did they mean front_view, or looking_at_viewer, or looking_back_at_viewer? We already have other tags to describe whatever facing_viewer is being used for. It serves no purpose whatsoever that one of these other tags doesn’t already describe. Though the tag itself should describe the same thing as front_view, it occasionally seems to be used for other things like looking_back_at_viewer instead, probably because its meaning is not as obvious as front_view. Also, if you look through the results for facing_viewer, you’ll see that the majority of them meant to tag front_view instead, but probably could not find the tag, while a few others were probably looking for one of the other aforementioned tags.
