Reason: I went looking into the Death Note tags, and noticed that there was a tag for shinigami, but that the posts with the tag never included japanese_mythology.

Shinigami are deities from the Japanese Shinto religion.

It's also the name of a couple artists, along with some other tags. It should be disambiguated with the species having a _(species) suffix.

I don’t think species tags should be disambiguated except in exceptional cases. Most species tags have other tags that begin with the same word, but they’re almost never disambiguated. In this case, all those tags are apparently based on the species itself, so I don’t see how there would be any confusion. Take gatomon and gatomonlover for example. A species and an artist, but the species is clearly the primary usage, so gatomon doesn’t need a suffix. Only if there are multiple species with the same name should there be any problem (viper and viper_(x-com) come to mind—and even in this case, the “real” viper does not get a suffix). This is not the same situation as with OC tags where no one character can be determined to be the primary use of the tag. That only seems to happen with very well-known characters from pop culture (mario, etc. despite how many other Mario characters exist). In this case, however, there are no other species named shinigami, and this is the name of an actual deity from an actual religion, and a fairly well-known one at that.

Difference is, gatomon is easily recognized as a Digimon species, and was in use well before GatomonLover came around. But shinigami isn't as well known as a species, and it's not unusual for people to refer to the artists as Shinigami, so there's a higher likelihood of confusion, IMO.

Well, shinigami has been in use for millennia. Long before, well, most things on this site. And it’s been well known in the western world at least since Death Note came out in like 2007 or so. I think they’re mentioned in Bleach and some other anime as well. Regardless, they’re far more well known than the artists.
