Topic: How does the "true meaning" of a tag get determined?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I saw there was no wiki page for "trapped" when looking for clarification on what exactly it meant, and saw there was none. I would write it myself, except I don't know exactly what I should specify as constituting or not constituting being trapped. How do these things get decided? Do I just write whatever and someone else changes it if they have an objection?

EDIT: I've written the page for trapped assuming it is an umbrella tag for situations where a character cannot leave a given area for whatever reason, and I think there should be a "no exit" tag to specify situations where a character has freedom of movement (there's a number of tags for that) and they're not cornered, but still has no way of exiting an area.

It depends on the tag. If there are a lot of images already tagged, look through them and determine what the most common use of the tag is, or to get a broad idea of what the tag can be applied to. Use a dictionary or Wikipedia definition if you really need a point to jump off from.

For "trapped" maybe something like:

Trapped generally describes a character stuck in a place they do not want to be, and/or is physically restrained in some way. This may involve a character being caught in a physical trap_(contrivance) (such as a mouse trap or net), being stuck in a room without available exit, being held under a character, or pinned against a wall.

When writing articles it's good to provide some popular examples from the tag that clearly show a small sample of what the tag can apply to, although some articles are fine without any image examples. That's just my opinion, though.

As for creating a new tag, my suggestion is to create a set of images you'd add the new tag to first, to see if it's viable, and ask in the "Do We Have A Tag For This?" thread first in case there's a tag under a different name describing the same thing.

Ah, thank you! I didn't know there was such a thing. And I got the guts to write the page myself and it turned out fairly similar to what you said - which is probably a good thing.

EDIT: Wait, where is that thread? I don't see it stickied, and search isn't turning anything up for that exact title - although it does turn up this thread despite it not being in the title, so I think I just don't know how to make forum search do what I want. https://e621.net/forum_topics/23085 found it
