I’m a little confused about how these posts work, and I want to make sure I’m understanding them correctly. To my understanding a parent post is the original version of the post while a child post is a different version of the original.

For example:

The parent post has no cum while the child post has cum.

The parent post is female while the child post is male.

The parent post is a image while the child post is a animation or webm.

Am I thinking about this the correct way or are these different versions end up being different characters all together?

Yes, the parent post should be the original post of the series while the child post should be the multiple variations made from the original and/or a sequel to the original post.

For cum/no cum posts, parent the no cum post.
For male/female variations, parent the original gender or the first post (i.e., which one was posted on the site first).
For image/animation, parent the still image. This also includes black_and_white WIP sketches.

A good rule of thumb is that the child post derives from the parent post, meaning that the parent post must come first. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule such as having multiple still images/shortened animations that were taken from a much longer animation, in which case everything must be a child to the longer animation.

On another note, parent/child posts should be avoided for long comics and should be using pools instead. If the comic is just a short 2-page post, then you can parent the first post as being the "prequel" of the second post.
