Topic: To Disambiguate or To Invalidate (Tag:Senpai)

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I just saw the tag senpai exists as a character tag, used... Very incorrectly.

The word is the equivelant to senior in most situations in japan, which would technically mean, "older partner". I vote personally for invalidating it. But if some would prefer disambiguation, i think it'd be fine too.

If we start tagging non-familial non-romantic relationships like "senpai" would imply, then maybe there'd be a case for using this (coworkers_(lore) and classmates_(lore), anybody?), but after reviewing the posts under this tag: no effort is being made to distinguish between ironic and unironic uses of the word in dialogue, and there are a few instances of the tag being used for solo images where the viewer cannot possibly be the character's senpai, or vice versa.

We've also got tags like senpai_(fnf), unfortunately.

I am so over this recent trend of entering full comic dialogue transcripts into the tag section.

I vote for invalid category. It's basically disambiguation but with less legitimacy.

This is like Aunt used in Chinese (and English, sometimes). Like Poe's law, we can't tell if formal, informal, serious, sarcasm, etc.
