Topic: [APPROVED] Invalidate webcomic_character

The bulk update request #3520 is active.

change category webcomic_character (0) -> invalid

Reason: The fact this tag is kinda useless has came up in discussion multiple times (most recently topic #35999) but I couldn't actually find anybody proposing to move it to the invalid category.

We don't have an equivalent tag for any other type of media, no characters even imply this tag so it's unevenly tagged, and just generally doesn't make much sense as a tag.

Isn't replacing it by making an alias webcomic_character -> webcomic helpful?

As I said my thought on that topic, webcomic tag seems to be intended for webcomic-related including "webcomic_char is in the post".
That is, A post should have webcomic tag when webcomic_character is there ... even if it's not a comic.

But I am not sure what'll happen on the alias instead of changing category.

Edit:webcomic_character -webcomic has a lot of posts. My understanding is wrong?

Counterpoint: webcomic should be invalidated too (or at least heavily retooled). It's the same problem as the video games tag, far too broad and vague for far too little in return.

Hold it, please. Is that invalidation for disambiguation purposes etc.?
Someone could not be interested in webcomic posts entirely and using their blacklist.

I feel webcomic_character and webcomic tag are not that different, except for the Mirror of webcomic (the real comic that is allowed by e621 UG).

It's not for webcomic posts, it's for posts that feature something that's associated with a webcomic. A plain illustration, for example, gets tagged with webcomic because it features a character from a webcomic, even though the image itself is not part of a webcomic, or even part of a series of images or a self-contained sequence. We have the comic tag for images that are (part of) a comic.

That's why the post has webcomic tag even though it's not comic etc. ... I knew it, right.
So, webcomic_character and webcomic as a tag are two different things, and webcomic -webcomic_character result may still include "something that's associated with a webcomic"?

If so then I imagine, They should be connected by implication webcomic_character -> webcomic.

And the argument is we shouldn't have a tag for "something that's associated with a webcomic", just as we don't have a tag for "something that's associated with a movie" or a tag for "something that's associated with a TV show". The "webcomic" tag doesn't indicate any particular kind of content, or even how the content is presented (that is, it doesn't have to look like a webcomic). If it does look like a comic, it should be tagged with comic. It's the exact same issue as with the video_games tag currently -- it doesn't indicate what kind of content is in the image, nor whether the content is presented in a way that looks like a video game.

As for the category change request, I think it should instead be aliased to invalid_tag. There's nothing to clean up with it, it would just be remove-on-sight. Other tags that go to the Invalid category are supposed to be left alone until someone can properly correct the tag (e.g. if a post is tagged with eyes, you should try to figure out what eye-related tags the original tagger may have meant, not blindly removed without care). Tags that just should not be used are normally aliased to invalid_tag, to prevent people from continuing to use it if people start neglecting to remove it.

What we should follow is TWYS ... alright.

I actually didn't know that wow, sounds super counterintuitive.
I can see how it mirrors video_games, and it would allow anyone to blacklist "anything involving webcomics (or their characters)", but it doesn't seem generally useful
+1 for nuking and/or aliasing webcomic_character to invalid_tag

Can't webcomic be aliased to comic?

wolfmanfur said:

Not sure. Since most tags of webcomic come from the implications and it's a massive tag, can't tell under what circumstances they'll manually tag webcomic. (Assuming you're asking for an alias after the nuke)

On closer inspection, it's probably better to change category of webcomic to invalid than to alias to invalid_tag

No, because webcomic gets implicated by things that are merely associated with a comic, but it doesn't have to be a comic itself. E.g. the character Raine Silverlock is from and implicates twokinds, which is a and implicates webcomic. But not all pics of her are a comic:
Functionally it's little different from webcomic_character, except for a few theoretical situations (e.g. the setting of a webcomic being clearly depicted without any characters from any webcomic, which would be exceedingly rare).

It's the same problem video_games had, where implications caused it to be plastered all over with no consistent use, with the only option left being to nuke it.

wolfmanfur said:

If it gets nuked first, maybe? If the implications to it didn't exist, it might actually get used properly on webcomics. We'll probably never know.

So now instead of one convenient tag to check for a handful of webcomic posts, I have to remember their titles and manually search.

Yay.

you can bookmark webpages, you know.

also, what are you even talking about? we don't regularly host full webcomics on here, there's literally rules against uploading them.

I said "webcomic posts", not "webcomics". That includes non-comic images that include characters from webcomics.

And yes I know about bookmarking searches. That doesn't help with things that I might find interesting but aren't from any of the webcomics I do follow.

This sounds like the same argument some brought up for not invalidating video games

I'm not going to lie, that does not sound like it'd ever be useful.
