Reason: Why are we trying to be more complicated than Wikipedia? This is a site to let people look at fluffy images, they shouldn't need a zoology degree to navigate. Yes, the common names are aliased to these headache names, but no that doesn't matter when the complicated names are listed in the sidebar and not being able to find a "dolphin" is remarkably unintuitive. And it's really, really not like we're futureproofing the site by using these names; scientific names can change as our understanding of the world develops, but in common parlance a bear will always be a bear. This naming convention straight up creates mistakes that aren't caught until far too late, because people see a random long name and assume it's correct because of course we would, we don't know anything about this stuff! Before you say that's a one-off example, dolphins belong to numerous different families and not just the delphinoid family, and yet...

Call a spade a spade, please.

In short, this BUR (and the BURs below due to tag limits, once I get around to them) will unalias or unimply several tags, with the end goal of realiasing or re-implying them to another tag.

  • accipitriform --> buzzard (edit: never mind, it's more complicated than that)
  • armadillidiid --> pill bug - BUR #3600
  • cervid --> deer - BUR #3596
  • chiropteran --> bat (or potentially bat (animal) / bat (species) if we're concerned about baseball bats) - BUR #3601
  • delphinoid --> dolphin (given what I stated above, this would be an implication)
  • didelphid --> opossum
  • hyaenid --> hyena - BUR #3623 + BUR #3624
  • lutrine --> otter - BUR #3613
  • mustela --> weasel - BUR #3622
  • phalangeriform --> possum
  • rhinocerotoid --> rhinoceros - BUR #3602 + BUR #3603
  • sciurid --> squirrel
  • ursid --> bear (or bear (species)if barazoku is a concern) - BUR #3614

I'm not an animal expert, so if anything here is outright incorrect, please let me know. Likewise, if anything is missing here, let me know too!

Even if you disagree with any of the particular destinations for these tags, step 1 is still to unalias and unimply. For the sake of convenience, for the sake of the readers and taggers on this site, for the sake of futureproofing against people without knowledge making easily preventable mistakes, don't let this convoluted naming convention continue.

To be clear, once these BURs go into effect, the next step will be to create new BURs that add aliases and implications to the appropriate tags, hence the "Part 2" in every description.

Part 2

+1 for the most part, with a few caveats:

IIRC, the bear alias predates most of the current mess and was added due to concerns about people who don't go here using it in its slang meaning of "a large, hairy, gay male" (what we would tag as barazoku, which has its own issues ).

bat_(species) would be more in line with tag name conventions. I don't know if any serious study has ever gone into the percentage of mistagged sporting equipment, but in general, I believe all three-letter tags are prone to misuse, sometimes not even due to ambiguity but outright typos.

sciurid is a hot mess of a tag, due to the site's insistence that ground_squirrels and tree_squirrels should both be included in it, despite nobody thinking of chipmunks when they write "squirrel". 99% of posts in sciurid -tree_squirrel -ground_squirrel are tree_squirrels, so this is a case where an attempt to enforce scientifically accurate terminology has significantly harmed the usefulness of the tags.

Finally, you forgot lutrine -> otter. There may yet be others.

Might be good if we use bear (species), then?

Fair enough. I'll leave it as an open question until the BUR for properly aliasing the tags goes into effect. (incidentally I haven't made the other BURs just to make double-triple-absolutely sure that nobody will come in and say that one of my suggestions is incorrect)

woof. Untangling the tags would be... one heck of a project.

Added, ty! I tried to cover my bases, but things must've still slipped through the cracks.

I agree. I always mix up suid and ursid. And there is no benefit in keeping them, beside what Wat said about bats and bears. We could get around that by ambiguouating bat and bear and adding *_(species) suffixes to them.

dubsthefox said:

Ooh, that's another one. The best part about the sus_(pig) tag is that it is more ambiguous than what it replaced, by its own admission.

I'd prefer if the aliases were reversed into implications rather than eliminated altogether.

The way the BUR is right now, it will just create a worse problem; that is, species only being tagged in the most specific ways.

Bear in mind that BURs need to be done in two parts. You can't directly 'swap' the alias/implication of two tags, you need to unalias or unimply the tags in one BUR, then re-alias or re-imply then in a subsequent BUR.

Some are useful. Some are not. Going on a massive spree to wipe out "big words" is as harmful as unilaterally aliasing those common names to the "big words" in the first place. Each group of animals (deer, bears, etc.) ought to be taken separately and considered without a hostility towards the "big word" for being a big word. We need to focus on understandability without slipping into anti-intellectualism. I mean this as a warning rather than an argument against the subject of this thread.

But yes, some of these words should have their aliases reshuffled if the common name is synonymous with the "big word". Bears are synonymous with ursids, so bear_(species) would be better than ursid. Deer are synonymous with cervids, so deer_(species) would be better than cervid. A suid is a pig is a suid, so pig_(species) or hog_(species) would be better than suid. The same logic applies for bat_(species) and chiropteran.

On the other hand, felid would be better than cat_(species) as there are three different types of living cats and a few distinct groups of extinct cats plus the potential for confusion with domestic_cat. Canids are even more so.

Yes, it is. Adding in tree_squirrel has been a (stalled) tagging project of mine. At this point, I think the best thing to do is to keep sciurid as an umbrella tag for the various types of squirrels (like canid is for dogs, foxes, and similar) and alias squirrel to tree_squirrel, because when someone tags the latter, they're referring specifically to tree squirrels rather than any other squirrel. Using squirrel_(species) won't work because users will think that refers to tree squirrels instead of all squirrels which only perpetuates the current headache of the sciurid scheme.

So, essentially, currently, all ground squirrels imply sciurid. My proposal is to extend this to all tree_squirrels implying sciurid. The tag squirrel is kept removed by aliasing it to tree_squirrel instead of sciurid. Ambiguity of squirrel removed.

...i'd gladly take the mixup between possum and opossum over delphinoid and didelphid...

We still should work something out to prevent that mix-up, though. Perhaps instead of just opossum or possum, we should differentiate them as new_world_opossum and old_world_possum that also includes the cuscuses. An alternative could be American_opossum versus Australian_possum or Indoaustralian_possum, but I think those would be veering into "confusing big words" again.

Updated

Please. I've never seen any point of choosing to alias common animal names that people would expect to see to a scientific family/order name that most people have never even heard of. I would've thought armadillidiid had something to do with armadillos instead of pill bugs.

Even Wikipedia doesn't use these overcomplicated names: Bat, Hyena, Squirrel, Bear, etc.

I'm not really sure the (species) disambiguation is necessary, considering that bat and bear are already aliased to chiropteran and ursine with very little problems, and it won't get any worse.

It's been a long time coming. This will make the site a lot more practical and intuitive to use. I agree with Clawstripe though, we shouldn't get trigger happy, some scientific names are still better then trying to juggle dozens of synonym names. I think all of the BURs in this thread so far are solid though.

While I agree with converting chiropteran to the common name, I believe bat_(species) is the better target than simply bat. This is a case when a disambiguation is necessary. Finding bat_(disambiguation) in the Invalid category and fixing it is far easier and faster than finding a mistagged bat amongst possibly a large bunch species consisting of (for example) baseball fans and cricket players, including a batboy dressed like Batman and a batter dressed like Bat Masterson, none of whom is actually a fledermaus (which would be a missed opportunity, in my opinion :p ).

Given that bat is already aliased to chiropteran, is that really such a big concern?

Why Accipitriform to Buzzard...? Accipitriformes is an entire order of animals that includes eagles, hawks, vulures, and etcetera, I don't really see how it'd become more practical to alias it to buzzard given that buzzard isn't really the generic term you use for these specific birds of prey. There really isn't any concise one for accipitriformes, unfortunately. Some people may use Buzzard in a generic sense but to most North Americans I think it suggests a vulture specifically (speaking as a North American). Buzzard is presumably aliased away due to this lack of precision, not because it's the best generic term for the group.

Rest are fine with me, I'm a taxonomy nerd but this stuff isn't necessary, sadly. wah wah

I did mention I'm not an animal expert, so I appreciate any and all advice you can provide.

Buzzard is a weird one. You could get away with unaliasing it from Accipitriform and instead using it for the Common buzzard, but I dunno how many people are tagging Buteo buteo specifically as buzzard rather than using the term for either any big bird of prey or any vulture; this is where the more elaborate nomenclature makes more sense, some terms are simply too general and vague to be used precisely, and there's no term for Accipitriformes as a whole that isn't also used for other raptors. Like, you know, raptor.

I guess maybe you could use hawk, and collapse the accipitrid subtag into the Accipitriform tag; these family tags can be pretty useless sometimes. Hawk is already aliased away to accipitrid, so... but no one would call a secretarybird a hawk, so maybe just change acciptirid to hawk, make buzzard its own tag (and have it imply hawk/acciptirid), and bite the bullet on Accipitriform.

But that'd mean eagle implies hawk, and even though both terms lack any specific definition scientifically-speaking, it'd confuse people. Maybe just free buzzard from the alias.

I was going to say raptor_(bird) or something, but... yeah. That doesn't work. Not with falcons being their own order. The unfortunate part with birds is that there's a lot of areas you can't really get away with concise common names because those names are shared across other families and the like. The closest I could think of is hawk-like_raptor or something similar, given the etymology, but even that I feel like would have issues that the scientific name would not.

Similarly, I would've suggested "buzzard" be used for the genus Buteo specifically, but many of those species are also called hawks, and while that may not really matter on a scientific basis, it may confuse people. Not to mention the fact that the term buzzard is used for non-Buteo birds of prey, such as the black-breasted buzzard among others. I can't even say to re-alias buzzard to accipitrid, due to (as previously pointed out), some vultures sometimes being colloquially referred to as buzzards. Buzzard being left aliased where it is may be the best catch-all option here.

Given that bat is already aliased to chiropteran, is that really such a big concern?

I agree to Clawstripe. I think the suffix could be handy and (hopefully) prevent mistagging. Right now it's shown like this in the dropdown menu bat -> chiropteran. This makes it very clear, that it is not supposed to be the sports equipment. chiropteran -> bat Is not that clear, especially to new user who are not familiar with the category colors. And chiropteran -> bat_(species) would make it obviously, again. Same for bear. Because chubby hairy guys are called bear too.

If hyaenid is being aliased to hyena, shouldn't werehyaenid and hyaenid_humanoid be aliased to werehyena and hyena_humanoid respectively?

Also, the alias hyaenid -> hyena may be bad because certain fictional species like mightyena can be tagged hyaenid, but shouldn't be tagged with a real species like hyena (like how buizel can be tagged mustelid but not weasel).

I edited right as you replied, but I think the alias hyaenid -> hyena would be bad because certain fictional species like mightyena can be tagged hyaenid, but shouldn't be tagged with a real species like hyena (like how buizel/typhlosion can be tagged mustelid but not sea- or river-otter/badger). Might be better to leave hyaenid as valid, and revalidate hyena to implicate it.

Your point's 100% valid, but I'm not sure how to feel about making a tag whose purpose is essentially just "hyenas + things that look like hyenas".

I think a tag for this purpose is pretty nice, to avoid the need for future disambiguation.

And also, that's how the TWYS policy works right? You see a hyena character, you tag it with hyena. You see a hyena-looking character that clearly isn't a hyena, you tag it with hyena-like or something.
Same for age tags, if the character looks young, you tag it with young, even if they're not.

idk what's going on here but there are 2 things I DO know.

They're so many species on here, are you really going to dumb down ALL their names? Every single one of them so that the common man can understand what animal they're looking at?
I was under the impression that E621 species tags was under an elaborate spider-web of alias and implications. Are you undoing it all?

2ndly, I'm all for deleting the scientific names of animals, but I also believed that it was because of the implications, it made it easier to tag what animal we were seeing, even if we didn't know what the animal was called.

Does this mean we have to know the animal we're tagging now?

idk, I may put an "IDK Face" instead of thumbs up

It looks like it, and I think this man earns a badge from all of us for his bravery.

As I've stated multiple times, these BURs are part 1. Tags cannot be unaliased and re-aliased in the same BUR; once/if these BURs are approved, then I'll set up new BURs to create the necessary aliases and implications.
