Topic: Redundant tags

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #4232 is pending approval.

create alias white_underside (27) -> white_countershading (19992)
create alias foot_growth (15) -> foot_expansion (224)
create alias butt_growth (6) -> butt_expansion (5225)
create alias laughs (2) -> laugh (12358)

Reason: As the title implies, they have an identical meaning.

Also of note, I picked the smaller tag to alias from and the bigger tag to alias to.

I think I'd prefer the growth/expansion alias the other way around, from *_expansion to *_growth. Unless there's going to be a more general distinction for *_expansion vs *_growth, *_growth sounds more natural for more use cases (switching *_expansion tags to *_growth still makes sense linguistically for most things, while switching *_growth to *_expansion for many tags can sound odd or wrong). And having some things use *_expansion while others use *_growth for the same activity of getting bigger would be unnecessarily confusing.

That may be true to you, but foot_expansion is clearly the prefered tag here 108 posts vs 33 posts.

By the way, changing your vote doesn't remove the fact you voted this up the first time, so you agreed with my proposal then, but now you don't?

Post count doesn't always dictate which tag should be used. Sometimes a tag with more uses is aliased to a tag with fewer uses if they mean the same thing anyway.

The issue of expansion/growth was brought up in the other post, and I had second thoughts about it (my vote is now "unsure", not "no"). I don't disagree that they should be aliased together if there's not a functional difference, and if people think *_expansion is a better target, so be it, but I think using *_growth would allow for more consistency with other tags indicating something is growing or getting bigger.

If we want to follow how the rest of the growth/expansion tags work here (except for muscle_growth and to some degree body_size_growth) then *_expansion is for when a body part is becoming larger and *_growth is for when a new body part is grown. Butt_growth should in that case be for when a character grows another butt, meanwhile butt_expansion is for when an already existing butt becomes larger. Same case for foot_growth. We already have a system in place, so I don't see why we would start making even more exceptions.

This works if the system is actively being used right. For example, everybody (coincidentally, including me a few times before accidentally) does not use the tag foot_growth for this purpose, but in conjunction to foot inflation/expansion and I notice a good deal of furries use the words growth and expansion interchangeably in inflation art. To add to that, belly_growth was aliased away to belly_expansion, but I am certain it is possible to depict a character sporting additional bellies during or after transformation.

Comparatively, breast_growth, penis_growth claw_growth (mentioned by Watsit on the other bur) and tail_growth are unambigious, and folks here know whether a post must be tagged these. It does not help that foot_growth is devoid of any wiki to speak of. Maybe creating a tag "sprouting_feet" would be less confusing and then would result in less mistagging while taking your comment into consideration? Leg_growth could be a good replacement too.

"Sprouting" might be a good alternative word here. I also really don't like the ambiguity between the words "growth" and "expansion". Somebody would have to track down and de-implicate/update/re-implicate a whole lot of "growth" tags to get that to stick, though.
