Greetings!

Now that we have our CoC streamlined (update here) we're looking into getting a few more hands on deck, specifically janitors and moderators. We're currently only checking for interest to get a general feel of how many would want to join up to help, and for that purpose we've made a small Google Form questionnaire.

What we're looking for are dependable people that can spare an hour or so very regularly to chip away at the site's post and ticket queue to help ensure everything runs smoothly.
We don't have any strict requirements except that you need to be friendly, helpful, and can keep a cool head when users are upset with you.
Your history on the site will certainly be looked into and scrutinized. Don't worry too much if you had a record or two from some years ago, though โ€“ we believe that people can change and grow over time, and some hiccups in the past are not going to ruin your chances here.
The reference code is "breezy". Remember this for when you are filling out your application.

These are volunteer positions, so obviously your real life should take a higher priority than e621.
As such, the time requirements are not set in stone, and you will not be forced to handle anything outside of your comfort zone.
However, we do expect some kind of minimum level contribution from all applicants.

In case you are not familiar with the different positions, here are the official job descriptions:

Janitor

Janitors are responsible for the approval queue.
They perform the following tasks:

  • Approve submissions that follow the Uploading Guidelines, and delete the ones that do not.
  • Review and handle post flags.
  • Review and handle post replacements.
Moderator

Moderators are responsible for the ticket queue.
They perform the following tasks:

  • Review and handle support tickets related to comments, forum posts, and blips.
  • Hand out records and bans to users who break the site rules.

Thank you for your interest.
This is just a preliminary questionnaire that will let us gather a list of people who may be interested in a staff position.
Please, do not expect an immediate response. If we have a position that will suit you, we will get in touch.

Funny enough I have an interest but have a heart condition where getting too angry and getting into drama could seriously hurt me. So likely a bad idea for me haha

Why is the, "are you 18+" question even there? I feel like that's the most pointless question ever.

Funny enough, I am kind of interested I joining and helping out. I've been here since 2014. So I've seen some stuff.

I presume that when you bring the new guys on, you'll give them a tutorial on how to work with the back end tools. As well as providing help and answers to any nitty gritty questions that might arise. Correct?

Another question, would you be able to chose what role you'd like or is that something that will be decided for you?

Last question, for those that become janitors, what about the black list? I wouldn't want some one to have to look at scat or gore all day if that's not there cup of tea. But on the other hand, I'd hate if an artist post got timed out because no one was brave enough to look at it.

Any answers would be helpful, thanks.

While e621 is officially an art archive for furry art of all types. No one can deny that a large amount of that art is of a phonographic nature. As a result I believe e621 would get legal hot water if they knowingly let anyone under age (or in this case, of unknown age) work for there site. Hence the safe guard question.

So, you wouldn't be thrown at the ticket queue if all you want to do is approve posts.
And you wouldn't be forced to deal with posts you don't even want to see.

It gives kiddos an potentially easy way to unknowingly out themselves. I can count on more than two hands how many comments I've seen over the years where someone says they're not of age, sometimes flat out, and get red barred because of it. Smh while laughing. I'll be the first to admit it too, I was dumb, but I was far from being that dumb.

I'd probably pop my name in for janitor if my life wasn't in so much flux right now. Trying to move house but I don't think the place will sell before the bottom falls out of the global economy.

We are not going to force you to do anything you don't want to do.
So, you wouldn't be thrown at the ticket queue if all you want to do is approve posts.

Submitted an application. I already read the ticket queue for fun and profit. And I've been on the internet long enough (let alone e621) to know how mods get treated and the comments that often get directed or thrown at them and know how to deal with them. I've been registered here since 2018 but actually lurked for many years prior to that. I remember the "Dog in your Guitar" days. I'm usually here daily. I see comments all. the. time. that break ToS and would like to help moderate/answer tickets.

This round of applications is just to gauge interest and get a list of people who are potentially interested in a staff position.
It's probably going to be open for a week, or until we get sick and tired of looking at applications. Whichever comes first.

We aren't immediately hiring whoever makes the best impression. There will be a second round of questions, and then an interview.
Feel free to toss your name in even if you aren't immediately available right now. If we don't move forward with your now, we'll keep you in mind later.

I'm here often enough anyways, so it wouldn't impact my daily routines to be a regular contributor here.

e926 doesn't allow minors. Both sites are 18+.
That question is in the quiz for a good reason.

Submitted, hopefully I can help the site a bit more since I use this place daily. It's pretty clearly understaffed so hopefully we get a noticeable improvement in speed of moderation from this.

Well, it's not that we want you here, on the clock, for exactly one hour every single day.

It's just that there are site queues that need to be pruned regularly, or they will start overflowing.
Worse yet, the workload is ever-increasing. We get more than twice as many daily uploads today than in 2020, for example.
This may sound harsh, but if you do not have the time to make some kind of impact on those queues on a regular basis, we will probably be looking for other candidates.

The "one hour a day" part comes from the fact that it shouldn't take a relatively new approver more than an hour to work their way through 100 posts.

You may notice that there are 2 separate groups of tickets.

  • Tickets from 4+ months ago
  • Tickets under a month old

I was sick for a few weeks this month, and tickets piled on. I will likely clean it up this week โ€“ if I'm not too busy with reviewing the applications.
The backlog from 4 months ago happened during a transitionary period, before I took over the ticket queue. We'll probably get to those too, eventually.

Maybe I should be more active on the discord after all.
I just don't ever have much to say.

Anyway I filled it out. I'm not as active on e6 as I used to be but that's more me trying to train myself out of... frequency of certain doings ๐Ÿฅœ๐Ÿ’ฆ

But I still do uploads (One shy of 1300 approvals)
And I can handle bullshit in the comments

And I left a couple contacts on my profile. I'm not hard to reach.

First time looking at the ticket queue and man does that look fun making me wish I had the time to spare. Feel like that tool could use a bit of updating though, to make it faster to use. Regarding reported comments or posts to directly display the post, stuffing the ticket itself to the side or top, reducing the number of clicks. Showing previous reports against the user, their profile etc. The more info you don't have to jump through the faster they'll get done :)

Not only but that's one of the big reasons why any staff should stay neutral(with some common sense) as always and not let anything get to a level that's "too personal" when it comes to any staff dealing with this kinda of stuff
Or just dealing with anyone naturally

Thats one of the big reasons that i didn't checkmarked that one check in regards of comments/forum/blips

You know i didn't think being a janitor/mod would be like a, job job, you know.

Anyways, i WOULD apply for like janitor, (mostly to get the replacement feature), but i don't have a discord... Alt. I have a main, but i'm not comfortobale making a new cord account and swapping between them.

Yep, the queue is a source of entertainment, cringe, and a massive amount of /facepalm from all the complaints of material they should just blacklist, things that were already reported and handled (with a note on the comment stating the user was actioned for it sometimes even) and "I don't like this person they hurt my feelings!" type of tickets. Also, a massive amount of people who don't realize they've clicked report rather than reply when leaving a comment for someone.

I've even discovered new art and artists from post complaints, or from avatars from the people involved.

Despite being a technical person, I'd be much more comfortable in the role of a moderator handing the ticket queue/comments than checking and approving uploads. That task seems daunting.

The ToS specifically says you have to be 18 or over to use the site. You see this when registering an account. Pretty sure it even says you'll be banned if its discovered you're not. Yet it doesn't stop people from bragging about it, from "I'm not even 18 and I'm using the site!" flaunts to outing themselves by referencing their age in relation to something.

You've also got cases like that robber who tried holding up a bank and the clerk said she couldn't do anything without seeing his ID. So he whipped it out and showed her. And she remembered his details and he was arrested afterwards. Or the guy who held up a convenience store/gas station and the clerk said he'd have to buy something first for the register to open. He does, spending time to pick something out, and it gave enough time for the cops to get there.

The checkbox works like a first-line defense. If they check yes then you can toss their application without wasting a single second more on it. Alsoooo... depending on location it might be mandatory for such a check to be in place when the job entails working with pornographic material. For example back before they basically went extinct many video rental stores in the US had a minimum age limit for employees just because they also rented out pornos. Pretty sure adult novelty/sex toy shops have the same requirement.

What is the "staffing experience" question trying to ask? What that question actually asks is if respondents have employee hiring experience (i.e., staffing a business), but I think the intent was asking about community management and running anything like e621 (i.e., what e621 site staff does). I don't see the relevance of the former.

What kind of credentials or identification will you be asking for? I remember that being a thing with a previous application. A major point of most of my online accounts is that I don't reveal personal information where I have community participation and vice versa. I'd rather just be the sum of my output in a given place than be judged for whom I am outside that place. I can scan and redact my passport if legal proof of date of birth is a requirement.

It's only looking for a basic description. So any relevant experience you have had in managing people, managing communities, holding positions of responsibility, technical knowledge about file types and quality, or other skills that seem relevant to either of these two positions. Basically, if you have some previous experience, and it seems relevant to the position that you are applying for, then that would be a good place to mention it. That's all.

It gives us an idea about what background skills or experience you might already have. Although not everything is transferable, not all websites work the same, etc etc but it helps us to know if something might be a strength for you already. Obviously, we would also train anyone we bring in, so the lack of prior experience is not a dealbreaker. (Dishonesty would be a dealbreaker though.) But yes, just a basic summary is fine.

For those who might worry if they don't have any prior experience with staff or management responsibilities: having a good history with positive contributions to the site, keeping the rules, dealing well with others, staying calm in difficult situations, etc carries a lot of importance right now. It doesn't have to be spotless, especially if a situation was awhile ago and better behavior can clearly be seen since then. We are looking at a lot of different factors here as we go through things.

However, if someone applies who has zero contributions, no interactions anywhere, has never made any reports, never flagged any posts, never done anything at all on the site... then we have zero idea about them, what their temperament is, what their behavior might be, how they deal with stress, how they deal with confrontation, their ability to judge what is or isn't allowed (in the site content, in other users, or even in their own behavior), and so on. So those applications would be at a definite disadvantage when we evaluate things. Just speaking from a practical standpoint.

I'm pretty active, strolling through the site, mmm just about literally everyday. for literal hours.... hmm is that unhealthy?

Answering an earlier question, how many new people do you need. Well, just doing some quick back of the napkin math. I see there is about 2000 poste within the last 24 hours, and if each person looks through 100 posts per day, then you'd need about 20 janitors to keep up. Of course you'll need fewer if people can pull more then ther own weight and vice versa. Pluss a few more just for a margin of safety. So I'll guess about 20 to 30 in total.

As a current moderator of an 18+ discord, the number of children that respond with their actual age is surprising. We just had someone who said "17 turning 18 in August" (paraphrasing), who we immediately banned. Children are ridiculously stupid.

I threw my hat in and would like to think I would enjoy being a janitor. I hope to enjoy the site for many years to come regardless.

I don't think there's an exact number yet, as they're most likely only gauging the interest for now. If there's enough interest, then we could probably see a good handful of new staff. The key word is "probably".

Since we are managing to successfully review the applications as they come in, we are going to continue accepting new ones for the rest of the week.
There are plenty of worthy candidates, and even though we will only be hiring a few of them, there are definitely quite a few people there who deserve to get a green bar for their past efforts.

Once all the applications are in, we will have to take some time to discuss and narrow down that list significantly.
Those candidates will be contacted, and will proceed with the second round of questionnaires โ€“ unlike with this one, the second one will give us more insight into the applicants' judgement.
We are splitting it from the original questionnaire just so that we'll have to review 20 of those, and not 400.

When the second round of questionnaires is over, we will narrow down the short list of candidates even further, and then move forward with individual interviews.
We will be deciding whether to hire people based on those.

Unfortunately, there isn't really a practical way for us to inform everyone who did not make it into the second round. There are simply way too many applications.
If you don't hear anything from us within the next few weeks, it would probably be safe to assume that you did not make it.
If that does happen to you, please do not take it personally. There are simply way too many applicants for us to consider, and we have to make judgements based on the limited information we have.

There's been a lot of talk about the ticket backlog, but are there any plans to recruit new members of staff to deal with the enormous and growing AIBUR backlog? One really isn't cutting it.

I've noticed that artist and character aliases, in particular, just sit ignored indefinitely no matter how well-documented. This site is slowly becoming a second FA in terms of being able to change your name.

^ ^ Adding one additional point to everything BitWolfy said: if we do need to expand more staff again in the near future, then we are likely to reference this list again for that. So even if someone is not contacted further (in the next few weeks) for this specific round of staff considerations, it does make us aware of them for any future staffing needs. Between the fact that the site has continued to grow every year, and also that sometimes members of staff may need to leave for real life reasons, it is safe to say that the need for more staff is likely to come up again. And if/when it does, we are likely to check this list first, before needing to open up new applications again. So there is that.

Won't mind giving it a try I been using this site for awhile just to see people arts and found a good bit I liked

It's a good question without a satisfying answer.

Any position dealing with the AIBUR queues is an admin-level one by definition.
It is really easy to fuck something up with a couple of clicks, which will then require hours of work to un-fuck.
That's not even touching the potential malicious actions.

Worse yet, that position tends to burn people out quickly. It happened to me, it happened to gatto too I'm pretty sure.
Ideally, we would have 4-5 people dealing exclusively with AIBURs. If each of them handled 10 requests daily, we would be in a good spot.
However, it's difficult to motivate even one or two people to keep up the consistency. I think the best we managed was 3 people for two months.

I don't know what a good solution to that problem would be.
Ideally, we would crowd-source it somehow. I just don't really like the obvious solution, where highly-upvoted requests would get approved automatically.
I've definitely seen poorly thought out requests that got upvoted regardless.

Do you guys have a system in place like a trainee mod or something, where they have some perms but are severely limited while a user gets used to the position? Kinda like having training wheels on a bike until you can get your balance down

if i recall correctly, that's what the Moderator role is for. i've only ever seen it used once or twice, and those mods eventually became admins.

For the new mods, would they be able to decay old records? I've seen a hand full of users who's neutral records have been outstanding for over a year. Or perhaps the issue is that most people don't even know that any record over 6 moths can even be decayed (deleted) in the first place.

The moderator role has since been re-tooled to focus exclusively on tickets and records. It is no longer an "admin lite" role.

For the new mods, would they be able to decay old records? I've seen a hand full of users who's neutral records have been outstanding for over a year. Or perhaps the issue is that most people don't even know that any record over 6 moths can even be decayed (deleted) in the first place.

Sure.

However, keep in mind that record decay is not as simple as just "it's been 6 months, record should be removed".
When a record decays, we actually review the user's recent history to make sure that the behavior that lead to the record stopped.

It's not Janitor+, both positions are on the same level as each other.
Moderators will not be able to handle posts at all โ€“ that is by design, as those two jobs are deliberately kept separate from each other.
They will be able to hand out records and ban people, but there will be oversight.

Mind you, we've had about 50 applications so far that didn't mention the reference code, so I would wager that those people didn't read the job description either.

sorry, even after reading what the position now entails i couldn't help but still see it as being one level up even though it might be seen as yet worse than janitor to some people given the community manager aspect (i was even tempted to call it "janitor-" instead, but that would imply that i don't want the job that i applied for)

Minor question: By handle I assume the work involving approving/rejecting/locking/etc. and not a complete hands-off policy? E.g. Mods can still add/edit tags and so on, like regular users?

Yes, you should still be able to edit posts, upload, source etc like normal users can. You shouldn't lose any abilities or tools, and you should retain/gain access to everything priv+ basically (so all non-staff tools). This was referring to how the additional staff abilities for post approval/rejection/flag-handling would mainly be given to Janitors, and the additional staff abilities for tickets/records/bans would mainly be given to Moderators.

This is because both Moderators and Janitors are a specialized version of staff, with an area of focus and the extra staff abilities needed for just that area of staff tasks. For example, when a Janitor finds something that needs to be deleted because it broke the rules, that Janitor can handle the deletion part themselves, but they then hand over the necessary information to the tickets, where someone who has the Moderator or Admin role can handle the other half of punishing the user for the broken rule (like posting paid content, dnp/cdnp, RL porn or other outright forbidden content). So neither role is expected to be able to handle everything, but they are given the tools and training for the part that they do oversee.

While Admins can do some of everything, depending on where they are needed.

Just in case anyone is left wondering, for anyone who indicated an interest in both Moderator and Janitor positions: that would eventually be discussed on a case by case basis between them and us, to decide where they might be best suited. So no worries about that and indicating an interest in both positions is fine.

i thought i had read through all of the information provided but i did not see a reference code. so i went back and skimmed through it again. i still see no mention of this code. am i truly so blind?

On one hand, if I applied and somehow got the position, after a decade of spending too much time on this site, I'd finally be a "somebody" with a fancy colored username. On the other hand, I'd have to actually DO the stuff in the position I volunteered for *sigh* Maybe I could speedrun getting one of those fancy turquoise usernames... /joke I'm not applying.

The reference code is in there. It's not really hidden.

my goodness! i was lost in the guidelines and rules. i can not help but laugh at myself, maybe i have over estimated my aptness for these positions XD

I've considered it for a bit, but I've decided to submit my application. If I make it to the next round, then I made it to the next round. If I don't, then no big deal. If my history does wind up playing a factor into my chances, I'll do my best to clean up in the future.

Aww shame, well you mostly just translate stuff, that +2 on your atleast accounts for something i suppose.
