Topic: Variants/Edits limits?

Posted under Art Talk

Greetings once again

I have a lil doubt. I tend to work a lot with variants, making edits from a single image to make a whole set, either a sequence or a dress up like gallery. The thing about posting those here is that i noticed a rule about those in e621, saying are only allowed 5 variants of a gived base. That means 1 base and 5 variants? (a total of 6 images) or that the limit is actually 5 images? to have it clear for now on.

Also i noticed some sets that surpass that limit, like this one of 9 pics from Dagasi: #2905156. But i don't know if is the exception and not the rule.

Thanks before hand for any answer.

I believe it's 5 total, so 1 base + 4 extras. The limit can be surpassed if it's showing a progression of events, when it's more like a sequence than merely swapping expressions/genitals/etc in different ways (e.g. Calm Expression + Flaccid, Surprised Expression + Flaccid, Calm Expression + Erection, Surprised Expression + Erection, Calm Expression + Pussy, Surprised Expression + Pussy, etc).

Though I too have noticed some that blow past the alt limit and which aren't all part of a progression (it's instead changing different aspects of the image to create a multitude of variations, some of which can be aligned to create a sequence, but they don't all fit a sequence).

I see, quite a grey line i guess?. thanks for answer.

The general rule is that it's 5 images including both base and derivatives. But the guideline's basically there to keep things from getting out of hand with what is basically minor variations of one picture. It's not a hard and fast rule, though. Sometimes, a little leeway is given if it's just simpler that way. Also, as Watsit points out, if a story can be made out of them, as with the Dagasi pictures, that leeway is easier to grant and extend to more than 6 or 7.

Honestly, it's generally best to try to keep these to 5 images since they're usually little more than playing Mr. Potato Head with one picture's genitals (and sometimes not even that, being little more than "clean" vs. "messy").
