Topic: How do I create tags?

Posted under General

I found some forum posts describe how to create your tags, but they're 3 years old and the inscrutions are very unclear.
Every time someone asks "oh how do I create a tag", the first step is literally "Oh just create a character tag".. ok but how?

Where do I go to do that? What are the steps?
So yeah, if anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it!

I need a character tag, Artist tag, and copyright tag. Does anyone know how I can create those? Thanks a lot!!!!

You could actually read that forum post you found. The process hasn't changed in three years and the instructions are perfectly clear.

Well, I did. But as I said, the first step to "how to create a tag" is "create a tag". I wouldn't call that "perfectly clear". That's like saying "How to change your tire, step one change your tire".
But yeah, I was able to find an old thread that had a better explanation, I'm following that right now.

Thanks either way, I appreciate it!

An alternate method to the one Wat8548 directed you to:

  • First off, create your tag.
    • Hit "Edit" under the picture.
    • Add the tags in the box for them.
      • Use _ in place of spaces in the tag.
    • Hit "Submit".
  • Next, change the category as necessary.
    • Look for your tags in the list on the left side.
    • Click the "?" beside one of your tags.
    • On the resulting page, go to the top and click "Edit Tag".
    • On the page resulting from that, click on the box.
      • Choose the new category from the dropdown menu.
      • Submit.
  • Return to your post.
  • Refresh to see your changes.
  • Rinse and repeat as necessary.
  • Bask in your accomplishment.

Further info/tips:

Before creating a tag, try variants of spelling if you think it might already exist, or ask here if you aren't sure. The edit box will bring up suggestions for partially-typed-in tag names, so you can just click on the one that makes sense. It'll also warn you on creating a new tag (often by accident) once you hit submit.

Redundant tags will often already be "aliased away" so typing in something like flagged tail gets you raised tail.

The following tags are aliased to this tag: raised_tails, lift_tail, tail_raise, lifts_tail, flagged_tail, tail_lifting, tail_raising, raising_tail, tail_lifted, tail_up, lifted_tail, tail_lift, tail_raised, lifting_tail, tail-raised (learn more).

This text on Wiki entries tells you that a LOT of different tags got remapped to it by an 'alias'. There is also a similar mechanism where it's replaced but no alias is made (often used for disambiguations I guess you'd say). The 'update' feature lets you create new posts with the 'updated' tag without it being replaced by an alias. It's not always appropriate to use an alias.
