+1. A character's expression is what's visible on their face, while a character's emotion is based on their state of mind and not a visible thing. And "smug" is more ambiguous, with people potentially trying to infer it from their actions or perceived emotion, rather than it being something visible.

You've been to this thread, so you know exactly how folks feel about emotion tags. At least, an expression makes more sense, even though I'm not all that fond of that either.
