Topic: Aliasing redundant tags to teeth

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #4693 is pending approval.

create alias teeth_showing (12782) -> teeth (714706)
create alias showing_teeth (1199) -> teeth (714706)

Reason: These tags should be aliased to teeth, since they mean the same thing.

For some reason this alias (teeth_visible->teeth) was approved while this alias (teeth_showing->teeth) was rejected, despite the fact that teeth_visible and teeth_showing mean exactly the same thing.

Some other tags to consider adding to this alias BUR:
exposed_teeth
tooth_showing

Fair enough (although FYI baring_teeth has been aliased to bared_teeth), it could even be turned into a disambiguation, but at a glance it seems that for the most part the tag is used just like the normal teeth tag.

Which sucks. I guess a disambiguation followed by alias for if someone tries to resurrect it? Disambiguations get finished, eventually.

Welp, apparently, both are common. Was hoping the former was pretty rare, since the latter will be redundant to tag after this alias goes through.

https://e621.net/posts?tags=showing_teeth+-teeth+-bared_teeth+ Oh no...
https://e621.net/posts?tags=showing_teeth+-teeth+bared_teeth+ 0 results. This is not a shock.

At least you can easily tell from thumbnails if it's bared.
"When a character pulls back their lips to expose their (typically clenched) teeth. Generally used to signify aggression and paired with growling or snarling." Reminder for convenience of tagging accurately.

Hmm, clenched_teeth is supposed to imply bared_teeth?

https://e621.net/posts/1800424?q=showing_teeth+-teeth+-clenched_teeth+-bared_teeth I believe this doesn't fit the definition of baring teeth? Pretty sure that it's only smile tag.

https://e621.net/posts?page=2&tags=showing_teeth+-teeth+-clenched_teeth+-bared_teeth I went ahead and just clicked through starting from here.

https://e621.net/post_versions?commit=Search&search%5Bexclude_uploads%5D=0&search%5Btags_added%5D=bared_teeth&search%5Bupdater_id%5D=27213 Is there any way to get a list of thumbnails in normal posts search form, from this search?

Updated

Immediate -1 from me. Showing_teeth and teeth are functionally different. A single tooth on the floor could count as a teeth for tagging purposes meanwhile showing_teeth is a facial expression made by a character.
They are not the same, it would tantamount to alias grin to teeth.

At most i can see an argument for showing_teeth -> grin or showing_teeth -> bared_teeth, but this, this is ridiculous. It should be an implication.

Yeah, why I need to go back through ones I tagged bared_teeth. I wish they had "taggedby:" or "edited:" metatag. :( It would make it trivial to ask someone else to go over the tags I did using thumbnails.

Also, I'm more than slightly tempted to just replace most of bared_fangs results (including my own edits) with bared_teeth + fangs because no need for all 3 tags. There's probably a reason that so few results exist for bared_fangs. There's all of one exception that makes sense and only because for a snake, ALL the visible teeth are fangs. Right...

Some of them are smile and not bared teeth, like that example. I have 200+ more to go through, before cleaning up the ones I'm not sure on. If I have to, I can just revert all of them. :(

For full disclosure, I never knew bared_teeth was even a tag to begin with. I never of thought of using that in any capacity ever.

While tagging I always tagged showing_teeth with the definition of bared_teeth in mind. Another reason not to alias it to teeth as folks like me will never tag bared_teeth, and while now I know it is a real tag after seeing this post, this ain't gonna be true for a good number of people out there who will try to use showing_teeth and it being redirected to teeth, it will result in worse tagging overall.

You're right. We'll have to do more work. Probably a case of retag the exceptions, update the 'teeth' examples, then alias showing_teeth to baring_teeth for future taggers? Not the first time I've seen case where it makes sense to follow an update with an alias, today, sigh... I feel like I'm at point where I may have screwed up by jumping gun.
