Topic: Not Sure What Exactly Constitutes A Eldritch Abomination On Here

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I'm personally a fan of monster or eldritch horror looking characters, the less humanoid they possibly look the better, so I checked out the Eldritch_Abomination tag and it left me kinda confused on what this website deems a, well, eldritch abomination, as the description didn't really help me with that, looking at the posts some of them aren't eldritch abomination in nature, I started removing some of the tags but then became unsure and came here to ask.

Some posts tagged with eldritch abomination seems to be just anthro characters but with maybe different eyes(like cyclops eye), or with 2/3 tentacles, or maybe they got glowy eyes, most of it doesn't seem like a eldritch abomination to me but then maybe that's just me.

Feels like most of the post could maybe be argued to fit under the ''eldritch'' part of the tag somehow but definitely not the ''abomination'' part of the tag.

Yeah it's vague. There are multiple types of abominations as well. The ones you come across the most are Lovecraftian cosmic horror aliens. Then, there are the ones with godlike powers, Zalgo and Gorefield for example.

I think that is the problem.

I was not aware of Zalgo and Gorefield, as my mind mostly went to the lovecraftion ones, however looking them up I could see how those could still be considered abomination even if maybe not eldritch(lovecraftion I would consider eldritch though some Gorefield pictures could be classified as it), however even if we were to have more tags for eldritch abominations I feel many of them wouldn't even fit under any abomination tag.

For example that I'd argue would not be eldritch abomination but abomination, perhaps an abomination of science? But the abomination tag seems to have been replaced with monster, and I can see why the artist wouldn't want to tag it as a monster so perhaps the closest they could get it right to is eldritch abomination.

That character seems to show up a lot, and I wonder does having a cyclops eye, black face and sort of tail hair really classify as an abomination at all considering everything else is just a normal anthro body? Maybe it could be close to Zalgo?

And with characters like that I'm not sure if the mere presence of tentacles is enough to be considered an abomination on this website, I'm just not sure.

The first one is definitely a mistag. The character is named frank the abomination and I assume the artist tried to give it abomination as a species name, but somehow ended up with eldritch abomination.

The second one is a lovecraftian monster from the cthulhu mythos. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyarlathotep
This version was drawn to look like the in-game nyarladothep which is an aduolt visual novel. The tag fits here.

The third one has more than tantacles:

  • It says it lived for a thousand years and was only summoned recently by a mortal.
  • Its body doesn't follow physics of nature given it can summon disembodied body parfts.
  • Whatever will happen to its victim, it can't be good.

It's also pitch black in color, like nyarladothep.
The tag mostly fits this one.

Hmm then I don't know anymore, maybe we just need a new tag, I tried seeing if eldritch_horror was a thing but apparently that's been replaced with eldritch_abomination, maybe we could have eldritch_horror back for the truly eldritch_horrors so to say? Ones that look completely out of this world, but I don't know if that would then overlap with the monster tag, or maybe to most people it would just seem redundant.
