given that it was uploaded by a janitor (in this case lemongrab) it's pretty likely that they ask for a higher quality version of the art from the artist directly

Or maybe the uploader use Waifu2x? (jpg noise reduction to png)

I can pretty much 1000% guarantee that this wasn't the case, uploading images that have been artificially upscaled is against the rules, and a janitor doing that would be very surprising.

Yeah I know, I'm just curious how does uploader get the high quality image, without provided source?

He probably just went and asked the artist for it.

Hopefully you are right ๐คท
Also could be a case of inferior source in link. BTW: If using higher-res images from say Discord or Google Drive or other sources, you might want to make sure you're not breaking the paywall rules! XD

Paywall - could be
Discord, MEGA, GDrive - should provide the link in the source (because I want to know)
Commission by uploader - highly possible (but no mention commission by whom in artist Twitter)

Then old standby of "just ask them" works. :edit: OK, someone already did on post.
Looked these up:
https://e621.net/forum_posts?commit=Search&search%5Bbody_matches%5D=png&search%5Bcreator_id%5D=38571
https://e621.net/forum_topics/34615 Which version of artwork to upload?
https://e621.net/forum_topics/35078 What's up with late surge of upscaled images?
Updated
I just realized that the artist gammainks "seems to have had a Patreon but not entirely sure", according to e621 artist info https://e621.net/artists/55818
When I search the gammainks on the other website, it seems only e621 had gammainks image with PNG format
Example:
https://rule34.xxx/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=8147439, the image match with the sources (JPG format)
welp, I did the imposible; i asked the dude who uploaded it
here's our discussion:

how did you get a png for post when the linked twitter source is a hella artifact-y jpeg?
i ask because a user is trying hard to figure out how you did it on topic #39158 (and i'm assuming they haven't yet tried to ask despite alphamule recommending it a day ago)

Hello!
Nope, no one has asked. You are the first.
From the artist. We're friends and I post them on their behalf. You've already answered the question.
1) Some artists are okay with providing better quality versions of their art when asked.
2) Apparently, in certain cases, you can download a .png off of Twitter. However, I don't really know what the criteria is for this to happen, but it seems it somehow has something to do with its dimensions, file size, perhaps the amount of colors used in it, and possibly the phase of Jupiter's Galilean moons. :\
You're better off with 1).

man, I remember back in the Tumblr era when people would get mad at uploaders for pulling from the raw because they didn't know Tumblr could serve the full res version to users.

It sucks how every service just gradually gets shittier as ads and anti-features are added and NSFW is pulled.
