Taking a selfie is taking a photo. That one could potentially also be flipped, idk, but selfie already has an implication.

photography seems ambiguous. Excluding posts that have already had it removed, it sometimes gets used for images that have the photos already taken, not yet taken, a have a photo background, or incorporate a real photo in some other way.

With the selfie tag, often the taking_photo part is implied but the camera device is not shown and we only see an outstretched arm reaching into the viewer but no visual proof that a picture is being taken (e.g., camera_flash, snap or click onomatopoeia, etc). IMO taking_photo should show that visual proof or a camera with a picture-taking pose. Taking_photo could instead include the broader process of getting prepared to take a picture (posing, lighting, etc), which might be how the phrase "taking a picture" gets used IRL, but I don't think that's good for tagging.

Selfie's an odd tag because often it's only a pose + viewpoint with no camera, so a tag like selfie_pose or selfie_view would be more accurate. (selfie_pose matches naming like paw_pose, and selfie_view matches and complements camera_view in particular.) Then you have mirror_selfie that may not have a selfie pose, but we still know our viewpoint comes from the camera. Then you have selfie posts that are taking_selfie showing the pose and camera but the viewpoint is outside the camera and not the selfie itself. Unfortunately, there's no good reason to separate a tag named taking_selfie (pose + camera) from the regular selfie posts (pose + view), and for the pose + view posts taking_selfie is wholly redundant with selfie.

The selfie tag is something that I think we can organize better. Hard to say all selfie posts are a certain way, and some variations get more creative.

And while I'm here, a fun one: dick_pic. Arguably still a selfie with the same variations as selfies.
