It was supposed to be for the meme of over-designed characters that ultimately look like nothing special, the kind you'd expect a character owner to be exceedingly possessive over. But yeah, I've also seen it used unironically to indicate an plain character an owner doesn't want others to use or claim as their own.
It might be better to alias it to original_character if it's going to be invalidated.
that also works.

Do we even want to keep the tag? Its intended purpose is as a jab towards the character owner.
Though the same does go for 1000_hours_in_ms_paint, and I think i was in favour of keeping the tag
I think there's some validity as a meme tag

Though it does seem misused for a number of reasons, usually to insult the character, which is why mary_sue was aliased away.
It should be aliased to meme. People not using it to refer to the meme are just misusing it
The irony comes in that it's being used unironically.
It seems to me that this tags misuse is a recent thing. I think it would be better to remove the tag from posts that don't follow the original context of the tag.
I found another problem with that tag.

This was added by the artist themselves and I reckon they added this tag seriously. They honestly thought this was to tell everyone to not steal their character instead of it being a meme tag and a pretty insulting one at that.
I'm in the process of nuking the tag if that's fine with you all.
Meanwhile I uploaded this that is an intentional reference to the meme, which is a real thing. Some posts do show the meme without malice. Those posts should still be searchable under one tag.
It's trivial to remove this tag from the posts with mundane characters where the uploader, usually, has unwittingly made a small mockery of their upload (and that should be done without any permission or prompting from a forum thread...). But what about the posts with "Do Not Steal" literally, unironically printed on the art? They are the reason the meme exists.
This situation is like a_cat_is_fine_too where the meme truly does exist, but the tag gets misused and needs some reclamation. As is always the case in these situations, renaming the tag might help, but my only suggestion is adding _(meme) to the end.
Considering how much original_character_do_not_steal is misused, it should probably be invalidated and replaced with original_character_do_not_steal_(meme), although the length does pain me. It could be shorter, but it needs to be clear that it's for the meme specifically.

This is part of why everyone started using donutsteel version of this joke.

So, donutsteel_(meme)? That could work.

I'm happier with original_character_do_not_steal_(meme) because then it's clear what the tag is referencing.
Do we have a policy of not using abbreviations at all, or could we use oc_do_not_steal_(meme) for brevity?

and i thought looking at the umbrella of pride color tags is overstimulating.
i honestly don't mind adding another word for, once again, better clarity, despite the length. another thing, because.
