Therefore, not mammals.
first of all, monotremes
second, I'm pretty sure that there's actually never been any point in the games, manga, or anime where it's stated that pokémon lay eggs, just that they "have" eggs. the details of pokémon breeding are extremely vague, and I think there are some pieces of media that it's stated that, in-canon, nobody really knows how any of it works.
pokemon_(species) doesn't implicate mammal and mammal is almost always tagged via implication, Ninetales looks like a fox, Tauros looks like a bull. I don't know what the point of this is, obviously Pokemon are fictional species, they wouldn't be reptiles or mammals or birds or fish or anything, they'd just be Pokemon. But in terms of TWYS, they often look like species that are mammals irl.
They're fictional species and have no place in the Phylogenetic tree. Lucarios aren't canines. Nor are arcanines. Are poochyenas hyenidae? No.
I just think Pokemon shouldn't be forced into evolutionary trees of existing species.
So if a Midnight Lycanrocs has an egg that hatches a Rockruff, he just stole the egg from the nursery and it just happens to be his species? Even as a little boy I knew they laid the egg. That's why you leave them at a daycare with the opposite sex.
At least lucarios aren't tagged as jackals anymore but they still shouldn't be labeled as descendents from existing taxonomy.
... Pokemon aren't monotremes either :p

if they look like canids they're tagged canid, if they look like felids they're tagged felid, if they look like equids they're tagged equid period. the fact that they come from magic eggs or shoot water out of their mouth or are constantly on fire or anything else does not matter.
