The bulk update request #9104 is active.

remove alias super_mario_64 (95) -> mario_bros (38904)

Reason: Mario 64 has distinct characters, locations and overall vibe, just like super_mario_sunshine, super_mario_galaxy, and super_mario_odyssey. It is currently impossible to search for posts specifically referencing this game.

Basics:
imply super_mario_64 -> mario_bros
alias super_mario_64_(game) -> super_mario_64
Characters/species:
imply koopa_the_quick -> super_mario_64
imply big_penguin_(mario) -> super_mario_64
imply tuxie_(mario) -> super_mario_64
imply tuxie's_mother -> super_mario_64
imply headless_snowman_(mario) -> super_mario_64
update mips -> mips_(mario)
imply mips_(mario) -> super_mario_64
imply spindrift -> super_mario_64
imply mad_piano -> super_mario_64
imply heave-ho_(mario) -> super_mario_64
imply chuckya -> super_mario_64
imply lakitu_bros. -> super_mario_64
imply chill_bully -> super_mario_64

All these characters are unique to 64. Source: https://www.mariowiki.com/Super_Mario_64#Characters
Hoot (hoot_(mario)) mainly appears in 64, but also has a small appearance in Mario Party Advance. Rosalina_(mario) still implies Galaxy despite appearing in spinoffs, but I'll leave Hoot off for now anyway, we can always add him later.
Similar situation with: mr._blizzard, grindel_(mario), klepto_the_condor

Locations/landmarks:
imply mushroom_castle_(super_mario_64) -> super_mario_64
imply bob-omb_battlefield -> super_mario_64
imply whomp's_fortress -> super_mario_64
imply jolly_roger_bay -> super_mario_64
imply cool_cool_mountain -> super_mario_64
imply big_boo's_haunt -> super_mario_64
imply hazy_maze_cave -> super_mario_64
imply lethal_lava_land -> super_mario_64
imply shifting_sand_land -> super_mario_64
imply dire_dire_docks -> super_mario_64
imply snowman's_land -> super_mario_64
imply wet-dry_world -> super_mario_64
imply tall_tall_mountain -> super_mario_64
imply tiny-huge_island -> super_mario_64
imply tick_tock_clock_(super_mario_64) -> super_mario_64
imply rainbow_ride -> super_mario_64

This feels like the same situation as Pokemon, where there's dozens of games and it's consolidated to one for the sake of reducing tag bloat.
Sure, the game has it's own characters, but there's only a handful that are exclusive to that game. Others are difficult to distinguish from others, like how Koopa the Quick is just a large koopa.

Huh, never realized Chuckyas were specific to Super Mario 64. There such an iconic enemy. Lakitu_bros. implies there's two of them, but that's news to me, since you only ever see one in game. Or, oh wait, is the one that records you (mirror room) different than the one you see before first entering the castle? Huh, a decade of Pannenkoek videos, and I guess there's still more lore to uncover about a game with a simple plot...

big_penguin_(mario), tuxie_(mario), and tuxie's_mother are all literally just penguin_(mario) in terms of appearance, but I suppose character tagging does allow some TWYK...

the other brother is in the studio, he's the one that handles the infographics and stuff (HUD elements).

While I agree to unalias it in settings where it's using Mario 64 assets, I can't agree with the character/species implications since they may be present in images that don't use those assets.
See immediate reply below.

Got curious about mips since it seems like it'd be a common tag used for things that aren't the 64 character, though that seems like that'd be a problem for later when there's a need to disambiguate it.

Good catch, updated that line

Could always tag videogame_setting when the other argument point comes up.

No thanks, we don't need another video_games tag.

I'm not fond of implying characters to specific entries in a series/franchise, since they can always appear in more games at any time. Which in turn opens the discussion to when an appearance is significant enough to not tag the entry they originally appeared in, that there'd be no agreement on. The Lakitu Bros., for example, aren't exclusive to SM64:

https://www.mariowiki.com/Lakitu_Bros.

Lakitu Bros., also named Lakitus,[1] are Lakitus first appearing in Super Mario 64.

Note the "first appearing" bit. They're also listed as appearing in Super Smash Brothers. I also wonder how often it'd get tagged for any other lakitu character, like the one(s) that appear in Mario Kart, as they're all often just called Lakitu, which is also their species name.

For lakitu bros in particular, I figured that tag was ok to imply since the SSB appearance was just a very tiny cameo

I see where you're coming from about where to draw the line though, that's something I'm confused about myself - that's why I left out the four I thought might be ambiguous

what about 64DS?

As a remake that should be lumped in with the M64 tag, imo. Essentially the same game, differences are minor. 64 vs sunshine vs galaxy vs odyssey have major differences though, which is why I think they should all have their own tags (and all of them currently do except 64)

what about the stuff that's original to 64DS, like chief_chilly, the castle's rec room, and Battle Fort?

Interesting, wasn't aware there were any posts showing the exclusive stuff. I'd personally be fine with a tag for 64DS for things like this, but I suspect that's a really unpopular opinion

I'll leave the others pending for now to give time for discussion. At the very least, the game itself can be manually tagged in confirmed cases referencing the game, so I approved that one - whether or not the characters should all imply the game or just the series in general can be discussed. I feel like the locations should probably be safe to approve, though, as those don't generally get reused in later games.

I'd prefer implying the series in general, as implying characters to a specific game in a series has regularly caused issues when those characters end up appearing in a later game. It ends up requiring unimplications that take a while to be undone, causing mistags in the meantime.
