Topic: How did you "come" out as a furry to your family/friends?

Posted under Off Topic

As someone who have only told a few people of my interest in the furry fandom, I'm curious to hear how others dealt with the dilemma of explaining to close friends or family members how it all works.

I could have sworn we already had this thread.

Wow, people can come out about anything and everything these days. I should come out as a black guy, even though i'm sure my skin tone gave it away long ago.

Parents don't give a shit.

Though my father doesn't like it because there's a lot of homosexuality in it and he is very anti gay.

Other then that, parents don't give a shit as long as I am happy.

Why would I tell my parents what type of porn I like getting off to?

Updated by anonymous

I'm not a furry, I'm here for the art (read, porn).

I just don't see the point in having a fursona, and roleplaying and yiffing and all that crap.

I don't know, man, that seems like a pretty big step. Do you think your parents will accept you?

Updated by anonymous

You need to "come out"? Unless they're already a furry (in which point they've probably already guessed), why would they even care?

Telling people "Hey I consider myself a part of (random interest) fandom" always comes across as strange. If you want to introduce people to something, just introduce them, let them find out there's a fandom later.

Same reason why I've never 'come out' right here.

At first, I didn't tell anyone but then I told my sister, then she told my older sister, then I told my mom and some friends and that's about it. I do plan on going to some cons in the future; they look fun.

Yeah, we're actually pretty open to a lot of stuff. Just as long as you act sane, it's all good

No matter what you say, this is what your parents will hear, "Mom, Dad. I fuck the dog while you are out"

The retarded shit people think they need to do when they are 19 I swear.

I came out since 19/01/2991. That's when my I told my parents. And given the time they were all like "Ok, man. Whatever floats your boat… and stuff"

This. I'm in the furry closet and very much staying there since I don't consider being a furry as a big part of my identity

I've never told my parents because that would be an unbelievably stupid and selfish thing to do, but I did tell one friend after getting mega stoned on Ambien by showing them a video of porn pics set to Closer by NIN.

Some friends know, but only since they know me and it happens. It's never something worth sharing

I don't know whether to laugh or cry when people say this. I don't see any reason to tell your parents you're a knot lover.

And unless you live with your parents you don't have to tell them about every single thing you do. >_>

Every furry I've ever talked to has at least shown curiosity in the more promiscuous side of the fandom.

Also, I've never told my parents about my being a furry. It's not a life style to me, it's just an interest. Besides, my parents don't need to know what porn I get off to. :/

I'm pretty similar to this, it just happens to be one of my fetishes. Don't remember why, when, or how I got into it, don't really care.

I disagree fundamentally with the concept of "coming-out". You shouldn't have to answer to others for your path or preferences, as it doesn't harm anyone else. Its nobody's business but yours.

There's a social science concept, I don't know if it has a name, but it's basically that when you divide people by groups, such as race, gender, orientation, etc, you are indirectly contributing to intolerance, it works to discourage being part of one of these "groups".

Saying I like furry porn but Im not a furry is like saying I love gay porn but Im not gay or at least bi. But thank you for the good laugh.

Not all furries are murry purry weirdos who dress up like animals and bark at people.

That's very true. Although, I think that's only true if the groups are exclusive to each other, eg: furry/"normal"non-furry, LGBT/straight, etc etc. I think the effect is counteracted or even neutralized when both groups are inclusive of each other so that no conflict about membership to both exists. For instance LBGT-straight-allies groups don't seem to have the same social effect as regular LGBT groups simply because it includes both groups equally without excluding either one at the expense of both. Non-furry example just because I don't know a "furry" equivalent. Irony notwithstanding.

I think that could be called labeling. It's like saying "I have a gay friend" Instead of just "I have a friend" who happens to be gay, but mentioning it like it's not normal could be considered kind of intolerant. :/

You don't have to date other men to be gay. Having sexual interest in other men makes you gay or bi.

I'm just saying most straight men would not like gay porn. It doesn't make you gay but I think it makes you a little bi at least. :/

edit: In hindsight it all depends on your opinion of porn. Rather if you would do that or if it's just a fantasy.

Dude, since when does looking at stuff determine your sexual preference? By your definition, that means I'm gay even though I would never even kiss another man, let alone have sex with him.

I never said you were gay and why are you getting so defensive if you're so secure about your sexuality?

Like I said, it depends on your opinion of porn.

I'm being defensive because you're implying that all straight dudes that like gay porn are automatically gay.

Not all furries are murry purry weirdos who dress up like animals and bark at people.

I believe this depends on your personal definition of either furry or gay/bi.

For me, a furry is someone who partakes in activities inside the so called furry fandom, meaning attending conventions, having furry merchandise (wearable ears or tails, Shirts to advertise furry sites[We need a e621.net shirt, btw],...), and most importantly: got a fursona who he identifies with.
Based on this definition, I'm not a furry because all those are big negative, I simply look at the art and move on to look at more furry art, I don't partake in anything except discussions where I think my PoV or expertise with something might be beneficial to the topic at hand, but besides that I stay outside of everything furry.

Same goes for gay, if you definition of being gay means jerking it to gay porn makes you gay, than yes, you are gay, if your definition only includes partaking in gay activities (as opposed to only fantasizing about them) then no, you aren't gay for looking at gay porn.
And in this vein, quite a few girls I know find gay male porn hot, are they gay too? If you enjoy lesbian porn, are you a lesbian, too?

For me, being gay or bi or lesbian or straight simply means to which gender the person in question is attracted to in Real life and wishes to enter a (sexual) relationship with.
You are female and wish to fornicate as many woman as you can? Lesbian.
You are female and wish to fornicate your male neighbour? Straight.
You are male who fantasizes about being nailed by dude but wish to enter a relationship with a female because you'd enjoy this more in the long run? Straight.

Got an Anthrocon mailer once...

Went to AC this past year, just told my mother I was going to Pittsburgh. My brother already knew. The shirts I brought home were discovered (the word "Anthrocon") when my mother did the wash and she googled it. She thinks it's kind of weird and I'm not sure how accurate of an idea she has, but she appears to be fine with it.

My father doesn't know. My stepparents don't know either but my stepmother was curious about it after I made a comment supporting the fandom on some news article.

Yeah, you nailed what I was trying to get across there. If you just have an LGBT group, the (unconscious) assumption you take from this is that the LGBT people are somehow "separate" from the rest of the population. I realize that these do serve a legitimate function though, as there is a serious amount of real intolerance towards these groups, so they deserve support, but in an ideal situation, we wouldn't have or need any support groups for things as trivial as sexual preference or your race.

There was a video with Morgan Freeman talking about Black History Month, saying "You want to relegate my history to a month?" and when the interviewer asked him "Well how can we stop racism then?" Morgan replied: "Stop talking about it."

Dester said:
...If you just have an LGBT group, the (unconscious) assumption you take from this is that the LGBT people are somehow "separate" from the rest of the population...

Exactly. Because it's predicated on the concept of separation and exclusivity (that gay people can't be a "normal" part of the rest of the community, they're a separate community, or so they say) then by its nature it reinforces those two concepts. And it's true that there's still a lot of good coming from these type of groups. But because of this, I think it's more of a mixed bag than it needs to be. I just think it would be better if we had LGBTS[Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Trans-Straight] and focused more on inclusivity and everyone's sexuality and rights. Promoting community building between the two "communities" by treating them as one whole community. I think that's the path to real equality. Separate will never lead to being equal.

I've seen this same pattern in race groups, gender groups, orientation groups, and yes even furry vs "normal" etc. And I can't help noticing that every group that builds off of separation and exclusivity only ends up fracturing within itself into more and more intolerant schisms. It makes the group about as toxic as it is helpful. And I think that's because the main premise of how the group was set up ends up sabotaging what it was intending to do; trying to bring unity by accidentally creating more separation. And I love that interview with Morgan Freeman. Heard it oft quoted but never seen the video before, so thanks for adding the link! Frankly I think he's brilliant on this.

RE: the original thread -- I guess I'm just doing the same thing I do about my other labels. I just keep on living like a normal person. I'm prepared to explain something if need be, IF it even comes up. But I don't want it to be the focus about me. It's just one facet. So I keep it with all the other facets, for when people genuinely get to know me. I don't feel like I need to bring it up or give it special weight any more than the fact I don't like caraway seeds. I guess my philosophy is to treat the exotic parts of me just as normally as anything else about me. You'd be amazed how many people follow suit: basing their reactions off of your attitude about it. Anyways, that's just my take on it.
