Topic: Regarding artist tags and 3D artwork

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

This is something that I have been wondering about for a while, and something I've been putting off on asking about.

Does someone deserve to use the artist tag if they have not created the art they are uploading?

Now, off the bat, most people would probably say no, since well, Artist tags are for artists alone. This is the case for a lot of 3d artwork from user open games, but the main dilemma for me have been Skyrim screen captures here on the site.
Some examples: https://e621.net/post/show/425899

I'm just not entirely sure if they should be allowed to tag themselves as artists when they, as far as I know, are just taking screencaps of a mod they did not create, on models they did not create, in a game they definitively did not create.

I'd just like a definite answer so that I could tag images like these better in the future.

photography is a form of art, id say photographer gets an artist tag, but skin creator gets one too, with more precedence

Yes, but I'm not so sure that it should be so when it's in-game screenshots. You don't tag the owner of a Second Life character as an artist if they take a screencap of their character that someone else made for them.

well does the screencapper own the character that the artist made? And maybe screencapper should only get artist tag if the character is in a pose or something to make it real photography and not just character model sheeting.

alternative idea is to add pictures taken by one person into a pool titles (screencapper name's pictures) or something.

I think that in-game screenshots should be treated the same way as (unauthorized) edits.

I have another question regarding 3D stuff: what's the point of having a "CGI" (computer-generated imaginery) if we already have a "3D" tag?

I honestly think if there's some artistic merit to the screenshot, then they should by all means be tagged. Even if they didn't create the models, there was some sort of effort made with the composition, framing and lighting of the image. Some of them even look like they've been processed with Photoshop or something afterwards.

Edits aren't exactly easy to make either. Whatever we decide for screencap should apply to edit as well.

Agreed on both cases. personally if someone's producing quality edits of someone else's artwork that I enjoy, I'm more likely than not going to want to see if that editor has other edits he or she has done as well.
