Topic: Tag de-alias, Microsoft

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

alright, so it appears that the microsoft tag was annihilated for no good reason other than it not being useful. The only problem is that there are some tags implicating it that keep making it get plastered back on images along with invalid tag.

So before I mess with the tags and fix them so that they aren't putting invalid_tag back on, is there anything you feel could be done with them? Do you think that Microsoft is a useless tag ready for the alias pit? Or do you think we can use it to be an umbrella tag for xbox, xbox_360, windows, etc?

Either way I am going to delete the alias and implications so that we can remove these invalid_tags, and then depending on the outcome of the discussion will set up the tags how everyone agrees they should be

Updated

The only use I could possibly see for it would be copyright, but I don't think that's applicable or needed here.

If we remove microsoft, then that means we have to remove nintendo. Tag wise, it's the same as microsoft. Both tags are companies, both tags are umbrella tags for consoles, etc. So one gets removed, so does the other

I think Nintendo is worth keeping, where I don't really think the others are.

Nintendo own a hell of a ton of franchises, a lot of which have characters that are incredibly relevant to this site.

I agree with everything you said.

So just because Nintendo owns a lot franchises, it should stay? I do not agree. What if users want to search for everything Microsoft? We do that for Nintendo but why not Microsoft?

What would people possibly want to search Microsoft for? Softcore anthro Xbox One porn?

As we've said, Nintendo has a definitive culture surrounding it, making it more than justifiable to keep around. Microsoft, Verizon, Bungie, not so much.

Windows, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, characters owned by Xbox, parodies of the company, etc. The exact same idea when they search Nintendo

So just because it's not as popular in the community, it's invalid? Wow dude

Microsoft owns a ton too, as does Blizzard Entertainment. Either we should keep them all, or keep none. I vote keep them all.

+1, I think they all should stay too.

True, but I just dunno if they're useful tags for search purposes.

Nintendo, for instance might be too broad to be useful...might be better to have separate umbrella tags for Nintendo characters and consoles. And to a lesser degree, the same goes for Microsoft. Though they have far less brand characters.

Some very good arguments on both sides. My personal vote would be for keeping it, but thinking really practically it doesn't have much use in terms of blacklsting/searching. That said, little use doesn't mean no use and some people might really like microsoft franchises to be under one term, for one reason or another

Howso? If I didn't want to see any Diablo III, Warcraft, or other Blizzard Entertainment related images, I could blacklist Blizzard_Entertainment. Same for Nintendo and its related products. Further, I can use Nintendo dinosaur to bring up all dinosaur-related images under Nintendo, be it Pokemon, Mario, or Star Fox.

We have the individual copyrights for franchises under corporations that own the franchises, eg mario bros and nintendo both.

I was presenting both sides of the equation, and I am in favor of having it

And I was responding to your wording, "thinking really practically it doesn't have much use in terms of blacklisting/searching".

The question is what good will keeping this tag do? It will be tied to basically nothing but xbox.

How will people benefit from it existing?
How would removing it hurt searches and/or blacklisting?

There was no opposition to removing it last time and no one missed it. We did away with Hasbro, Microsoft isn't any more useful.

I've always been against it but I couldn't respond due to not finding this thread

Like I've said, users can use the microsoft tag to find everything microsoft related, just like how users use nintendo to find everything nintendo related. It may not be as popular, but it's still a valid tag.

Hasbro was destroyed because it's TOO massive. All of Wizards of the Coast is Hasbro, as is Ponies, as is all its toys, as is their film and TV properties, as is their games- Hell, they had a hand in developing X-COM for crying out loud.

The thing is, all these things are kept under subsidiaries, so Hasbro is the company over the companies, basically. Instead, we just tag the subsidiaries.

Comparatively, Microsoft doesn't have as much as Hasbro, and keeps almost all of it confined to one division. It still has quite a lot.

I think that it could be very useful for that but I knew that's what people would say. "how does it benefit us? It doesn't do much" You have brought up a good point, that it could be a very used umbrella tag

The Hasbro discussion is something I've been back and forth with Char for about a month. The size and how much content they have on the site makes things difficult. It's an entirely different scale from everything else, so it's hard to group it.

I do like the consistency of things, and the Bungie example made me think of porn of The Flood (rule 34, people!) that would deserve a Microsoft copyright tag.

So....is that a yes to having microsoft as a tag now?

Also Hasbro was just so large and encompassing that it served little purpose as their content was also greatly varied. Nintendo is huge too but has similar content. I think we can all agree on that part
