No. Maw tag means it is present on the picture. Gaping maw mean the maw is not only present, but open and gaping.

This should be an implication, not an alias.

However if it's not gaping, it's generally only a face; there isn't many instances where it's only a maw (no eyes or other parts of the head), yet not gaping.

Ok. So if we have a tag "opened_mouth" should we make an alias (or implication) of just "mouth"? I dont see the logic in this. Because there is none.

Actually I'd say yes for the implication/alias.

Alternatively, think of it this way: Do you seriously think that every image with a maw has been tagged maw? If not, what about tagged image makes it tagged as such? In most, if not all cases, it's because the maw is opened, nothing else.

I was kinda ambivalent on the whole matter til I read this. I agree.
A maw is a mouth. Almost every single image has a mouth. Pretty simple.
A gaping maw is an open mouth. Or, a gaping mouth.
But then, we can't really label every picture with an open mouth as gaping maw, because then you get every single image with an open mouth in it. What quantifies gaping maw? is it a close up? or mouth open a certain width? It's a very gray area...
The easiest answer is that a gaping maw is something that someone who fetishizes the mouth--as the page says 'teeth, tongue and pulsating globbery uvula--would be interested in--thus, an anime :D mouth will not really be of interested, while a hyper detailed 'swallowing innocent furries whole' is of more relevant and should be tagged accordingly.
The tag, with this theory, should probably be "detailed gaping maw' or something but I think 'gaping maw' would cover it quite effectively as well :D
And 'maw', as a general rule, is unneeded, as many images have mouths that are closed and that are still relevant to those who find interest in such things... and those that ARE are probably already labeled 'vore' :) Thus, 'maw' is unneeded and only brings to mind bad wolf rp'ers with auds and orbs and peds and such. ;)
