Topic: REPOST

Posted under General

OK Folks if an image is a repost, you better start doing the following two things:
1: Make a deletion request for the duplicate image.
2: Provide a link or id number for the image it is a duplicate for.
3: Tag the duplicate image as "duplicate".
4: Set the parent of the duplicate image as the ID number of the original post.

Posting a general comment that just says 'repost' and provides no information whatsoever is not only unhelpful in the extreme, but wastes our time when half the time your 'oh so helpful advice' turns out to be a complete red herring and we spend 15 minutes hunting for a duplicate picture that doesn't exist.

I'm going to start banning people that do the single word 'repost' comment shit-and-run if this keeps up, because it seems most of the time it happens, you're wasting our time with a fake repost warnings done outside of the deletion queue. Consider yourselves warned.

if someone said repost, lets say a month ago, can they still get banned even though they forgot about that comment or can't find it? because i don't think i ever did that without posting the link, but then again my memory sucks -.-
btw i fuckin love your mascott!!

No, you're fine. We're not unreasonable here. Just please try and report it properly in the future.

If a post is a repost should we just not even bother commenting that it's a repost and only flag it for deletion with the original post # as the reason? Or is it helpful to link to the original post in a comment?

Updated by anonymous

Also, is there a statute of limitations on reposts, or should we be flagging reposts from 10 months ago or older as well?

And one final question: What if the repost is an unaltered version of an image from the artist's gallery/galleries, or a higher-quality version of the original post? Should we favor the repost, or the original, or let the admins make the call?

I don't think there is prescription period on reposts, so if you find any, even old ones, go ahead.

Provided 2 pics are exactly the same, the most recent one should be deleted imo, since it's the one that is fits the description of "repost".

For the other cases, it depends ; if one version has a watermark other than the artist's (like "Aeriedies.com"), it should be deleted.
If one picture is higher quality than the other, it should be kept (although those pictures with absurd resolutions make me rage).
If the repost is due to the artist bringing changes to the pic, both versions should be kept. A coloring from someone else is fine too, providing it is well done.

I would just like to add that everyone should be careful before screaming for the repost. Before flagging anything, I personally put both pictures on different tabs and i switch from one to the other in order to spot differences (and there are, sometimes).
Keep in mind that any picture who is deleted cannot be reposted anymore, due to it's MD5 checksum being saved.

It doesn't matter how old the repost is, if you find a pair of reposted images that are both 2 years old, by all means report it.

In the case of two images that are visually identical but one is larger/higher quality/etc., always flag the lower quality image for deletion. If they appear indistinguishable, flag the newer one.

Okay this is me being retarded. but how would we report this?

Not entirely sure of this process.
Was told to put it as the parent in the irc channel :)

On the dupe post:
1. Click edit under the picture and add the number of the post your pic is a dupe of in the parent post box.
2. On the left, under options, use "Flag for deletion", preferably with a message like "Duplicate of post #12345"

There's a report function for a reason, guys.

Posts still pending for approval can't be marked for deletion.

True, but usually those are marked for approval within the next day. And I assume that most mods will look at both the reported posts and posts that need approval whenever they have the time. Most will not look at this thread.

usually within the first day but a lot of posts have been coming in lately. the reason i put it here was because that image was still pending approval after three days and i was like heck might as well

there are a few people tagging things as duplicate when it can't be flagged, do you want us to do that?

The flag for deletion tool is there for a reason, you know. If you can't flag it, it's probably awaiting approval.
<s>(Just flagged 11 hardblush posts.)</s> All deleted.
luvdaporn: I mean that people are posting links to reposts that can be flagged. If it hasn't been approved yet, go ahead and link to it. If it has, flag it.

Er... something I've been noticing here, a common method used to link reposts together is by selecting the repost to be the child post of the original. This is fine, but when the repost is deleted, the original post still is marked as being a parent post.

Updated by anonymous

That's supposed to happen. Marking parent/child posts when deleting transfers favorites from one to the other.

Updated by anonymous

Really? Oh crap, I guess I shouldn't have went to those deleted posts and removed the "parent" marker...

not really a repost more like parent and child post: look at the tail

yay sensorship!

Quick question about post #73413 and post #59521.

73413 is larger and has no watermark, but is of lower quality than 59521. Which should be deleted, or should they both stay?

Updated by anonymous

The larger one is older; the large one was posted about 2 hours ago, and the smaller one was posted about 15 hours ago.

While lowering image quality and raising file size due to recompression <i>at the same time!</i> Everybody wins!

A follow-up on this, I went and favorited a repost, and the parent indeed replaced it when it was deleted. However, no ill effects occurred when removing this relationship, so I shall continue to remove deleted child posts from images, as there isn't really a reason to have a post be in a yellow border if it's child was deleted.

post #75001 looks like a lower res version of post #3230
Though they have different signatures. I dont know what to make of it, but two pictures are basically the same - one should be deleted.

Updated by anonymous

post #77716 is a repost of post #37188, but with an added highlight around the sign in the bottom left corner. (Which could have been accomplished by just adding a note to the original image... -_-)
