That's like trying to find a non-moonspeak word for sushi. I mean I guess you could call it "fish and stuff wrapped in rice," but there's no real English term for it. The Japanese came up with the thing first and, since it's only two syllables long, us westerners decided to just use the existing word.

This is an issue to me because so many chibi-styled characters appear to be children.

Chibi is chibi. It doesn't have any other names. It's just a style of drawing characters.

Yeah, I don't immediately think of 'young' when I see the word chibi, just that it's usually adult characters drawn in a style that emphasises a lack of detail in the limbs and an oversized head.
