now u stuck whit buggy 8.1 or unsuported w7, congratulations.

Windows 7 is still supported and MUCH cheaper now that the advertiser os is out. In fact, windows 7 will be supported until 2020 for security updates. By then, hopefully Microsoft will get rid of the idiot in charge and stop with the stupid. Many people, including major youtube techies are dumping 10 and going back to 7 or 8.

Enough that I had to buy an entirely new computer

And here I am on a Mac :/

I HAD a mac until my screen shattered. I bought an HP Pavilion (over an Omen) because I wanted a Windows laptop, but I specifically tried to look for a laptop without Windows 10 (and couldn't find one, fuck).

  • long story ahead, prepare your anus

i had a computer that had windows 7 on it that worked fine...then january 1st of 2014, it randomly blue screened on me (happy f***ing new year amirite?) i got it fixed enough for it to work again, with a reoccurring problem of it hard crashing at random intervals of half an hour to 3 three hours after being turned on and sometimes it working fine for an entire day (woop) i dealt with this problem for the next two years. i made sure not to ever have windows 10 touch the damn thing.

finally in early july 2016, i got enough money to buy myself a pre-built pc (cause im dumb and didnt want to build one myself) that, when i ordered it, had the choise of getting windows 10 on it for free, or adding $45 to install windows 7. I didnt care, and selected windows 10 because it was cheaper and because i heard that you could allegedly over-write windows 10 and put windows 7 on it if it hasnt been more than 30 days since windows 10 was installed. the order said it would take 15 buiseness days to arrive starting from july 5th.(the day i ordered)
I figured "ok it'll take about 20 days to get here counting weekends they dont work...so i should have enough time." 20 days pass, no computer yet. finally on june 16th i get a giant package...my machine has arrived. i plug it in and set to trying to install windows 7. (mfw its past 30 days. T_T) i try anyway. spend the next 8 hours trying to load windows 7. screen finally changes after 8 hours of loading bar. "Cannot Install program: Windows 7"
im now stuck with windows 10 and my computer criticizes me for trying to downgrade

the computer with windows 7 has been given to my grandmother and all of my games and logins & shit have been wiped from it and all she does is play diner dash and other food games on it

    FML.

Just wipe the harddrive and do a fresh install of Windows 7. That's what I did after pirating Win7 because I am NOT paying 120 goddamn dollars for software that's that old and everything is great.

Oh, and my OS is installed on an SSD with other data on the HDD. I'd love to see it try and figure out how to install 10 over it.

  • I've had the luckiest break with Win10, then. Not only did it make the computer run smoother, but it's had less issues so far. Even the "shut down and update" feature split to let me either shut down or shut down and update the computer, after a botched attempt due to iffy AMD hardware.

All in all, Win10 is running better for me than Win7 did. Both are fine to me.

I might do that tbh, I have fucking zero desire to put up with Windows 10.

  • Biggest problem with Windows 10 is the almost unstoppable spyware. And Microsoft thought it was a great idea to backport their spyware to Windows 8 and 7! Fuck that shit.

I barely use Windows 7 these days, except for games. I always use WSUS Offline for my updates, so that Microsoft can't shove their updates unsuspectingly down my throat.

Besides, I use Arch Linux basically all of the time now. Learning curve was something else, but now I know how it hangs together, customization is so much fun. :)

  • With new games coming out with steamOS support I can conceive of no reason to not be running Linux.

Ubuntu is easier to use, less buggy, and comes packed with a LOT less bullshit than anything I have seen of windows, or mac.

And it doesn't do a whole lot of telling you what to do.

Haha, that gave me a good idea. I still have a windows 98 computer. At least it doesn't crash often, run slow, and ask for updates with pointless crap every day.

windows ten didn't cost me a single penny

Hi! Windows 7 user reporting from July 2021 here and can confirm STILL getting those prompts.

if you're getting that full screen prompt then don't click the big buttons. theres another button under those bigger ones that say don't warn me again. never had another one of those screens pop again on start up or during usage.

i used to hate w10 until i cracked it to win10 pro. now is not so bad anymore but i still complain about how much ram it needs (1gb minimum - 2gb to be usable). this OS also killed one of my hard drives because of how much it (presumably) accesses storage for whatever reason. other than that, the os is fine. is ugly, but it runs just about as w7 did. you'll eventualy get used to having duplicate sections with a different ui like my computer > properties; if you right click the icon and select properties you'll get a window with the modern ui, but if you open my computer and right click the background it shows the classic (and easier to read) ui.

the automatic updates cannot be turned off, but even if you're using a hard drive as a C drive you'll most likely not notice when its updating. you can also turn off notifications for a lot of things like the infamous "reboot now LOL".

don't get me wrong, im not a sucker for w10. first time i tried it was in 2018 and i installed the home version which is the shitty one. those were the worst 6 months of my life:

    - the screen wouldn't stop turning off because the OS was trying to install an incompatible version of the display driver and i had to turn off automatic driver updates so i could install the latest official version. even after disabling and rebooting, the screen would continue to turn off and on again. i had to google the solution and it had something to do with the task scheduler re-enabling automatic driver updates. all this with the screen turning off at 30sec intervals. i eventualy got the thing working.

    - the automatic updates rebooting the computer while i was in the middle of an online game. 20 minutes of intense updating later, the computer would boot to desktop. then i remember a notification telling me to try some new feature or something; no, fuck you.

    - i couldn't customize the ui to my liking. i can't remember what it was but on the pro version you can and you could also change that on w7 (i think it was the task bar colors or transparency).

    - then windows telling me some program was incompatible even if it was running flawlessly. i don't get those messages anymore.

    - and most likely a lot more problems i can't remember anymore.

i later rolled back to w7. would have done it a week after the first contact with that piece of bloatware that w10 home was, but i had no way of installing w7 again.
last year i got a new computer but neither w7 or 8.1 want to update on this hardware. funny because it says the hardware doesn't support that version of windows, but windows is made to run on x86-64 processors (yes, i know some very old x86 software might not run on modern x86 processors, but im not running those anyways) so it should work no matter what but they wouldn't update, so i had to downgrade to w10. after deciding to crack it (because im not buying garbage thats more expensive than my computer) to w10 pro, i now regret not having done that earlier. all the problems are gone... thats until you realice windows defender scans your drives in search of cracked or very old games and software and then puts it in cuarentine. i had to zip some older programs and cracked/ripped versions of older games i have as memorabilia of my first gaming computer so defender wouldn't delete it. i think it can still scan those files but i can't do nothing about it right now other than being careful what i open with the files explorer.

I know but I'm afraid if i click don't warn me again microsoft will "poison pill" my OS like they did with windows xp.

While W7 is no longer supported (doesn't get updates) it still runs fine even now and if your not up to the last released version you can get the updates you don't have manually from trusted websites.

I have Windows 11, it's fucking amazing. Never been happier with Windows

Also fuck Mac and Linux, they suck lol

Dude, are you serious? Even if I am a game pass subscriber and a slight MS simp, I can see the problems with 11 everyday. Plus the missing features... I did install it on my PC, cuz i wanted that new look or whatever, but then there's no dragging files through taskbar? Seriously? Or no start menu app folders...
And don't get me started on the nonsense that are the official minimum requirements...
While i didn't go back to 10, because i couldn't do the easy revert thing, and didn't feel like reinstalling everything, i went the other way, and joined the insider thing. Don't recommend it. The builds are insanely broken.

Oh and about Linux, i have a really odd Thinkpad, that had some weird sleep issues on windows and it's touchbar thingy didn't work, while on Manjaro (what i tried at first) and Kubuntu (what i have installed right now) it hasn't had any problems. If you don't plan on gaming, and don't use MS office, Linux isn't really a bad option.
Can't say much about MacOS though, the apple ecosystem is cool or something i dunno.

Just because DirectX doesnโ€™t really work on Linux doesnโ€™t mean you canโ€™t use things like the proton compatibility system and i386 mesa driversโ€ฆ

  • I was gonna make a joke about now hating Windows 11 and staying with Windows 10 now, but I'm actually a bit late for that.

Can't wait until Windows 12 comes out and we all hate it, and want to stay on Windows 11.

  • Yay, I'm back here to say something nice about Linux again. I recently had to set up an older pc for someone. Problem was i didn't have any spare SSD to throw in there, so i said fuck it, let's grab an old laptop hard drive. And installed Ubuntu with KDE there. And while yes, it is slower, for web browsing, word, zoom, basic PC things it's perfectly usable. If i put windows 10 there, or even better windows goddamn 11 ... HAHAHAHAHAH

And yes, i know booo Ubuntu booo snaps. But i don't care and i don't want to start a distro war on here. That's just what I'm the most familiar with.

This is me. Right now. Learning that next year Steam will no longer operate on Windows 7.

*sigh* Windows 7 had a good run. But now we are forced to use an operating system that will clutter our computers with bloatware and forcibly switch our default browsers to Edge every time it updates.

And like hell am I going to W11, it's just W10 trying to be Mac. And I hate Mac. No offense, Mac users, it's just not flexible enough for me.

For a start, you can just prevent Steam from updating. There's the possibility that contrarians will simply come up with a fix. But in the long run, it's the delightful choice between having to use whatever shartware mS pump out, or a Linux distro. Why is 'progress' always like this.
