It should be noted that the memetic Pepe is nothing like his comic prototype. The comic Pepe was neither sad nor smug and the comic definitely wasn't political. Just for clarity's sake, the Nazis used the version of the swastika that represents 'power', not the one for spiritual harmony (one of them goes clockwise, the other goes counterclockwise. Unfortunately, I don't remember which is which).

I read a history article once that said there are two kinds of swastika: It said that one facing one direction represented power and was the form used by the Nazis, and the other faced the opposite direction and represented peace and spiritual harmony. Why would they pick a weird symbol if it meant something as hamfisted as "hurr durr power hunger"? There's even old samurai suits depicting a kamon that uses the same version used by the nazis, I doubt a japanese feudal clan would like their family emblem to mean "we lust for power" instead of "we strive for harmony".
