    I believe that Basitians use 'King' as a gender neutral term for the current ruler. The current person in power is the 'King', as if it were a chessboard. The married counterpart is the 'Queen'.

    The strongest Basitin is always the King. This time it just happened to be a lady, but they didn't feel like changing the title over such a small detail.

    Which isn't even that far from historical real world use of the title.

    Well, he's got a pair of threes, at least. So she's saying she has a pair of twos or worse, when in truth she has one of the strongest hands in the game.

    Also, he has a 1 somehow. There isn't a 1 in a deck of cards; the Ace is simultaneously the 1 and also the most powerful card, above the King and the other face cards.
