The artist did a good job of actually making gyarados look like a more grown up version of magikarp. Sometimes pokemon look so different in their evolved forms it's hard to imagine how they would grow into that form naturally.

I STILL wonder how it is that Remoraid evolves into Octillery, and Luvdisc doesn't evolve into Alomomola
