Well, it's just my guess as her nightmares just get worse and weird stuff happens with little to no explanation and the whole idea of her getting back with her friends just has her replaying things that happened last she was there like she never left.

However, yes, Mae most likely is due to her "disconnecting" with how she felt about people "just becoming shapes", so she mercilessly beat a person with a baseball bat because she couldn't see him as a person.
