  • Opening it with most of my programs I can see the cupcake side of the image, but I'm not exactly the geek to figure it out normally...

  • It's probably an animated .png, as that image format is generally only supported by a few web-browsers at this point...

  • I c wut u did thar...
The picture compressed into a thumbnail is shown as RD and AJ.
While if the picture is expanded, the black lines over-show the picture.
    Right?...

  • Pretty sure this is not an animation and doesn't seem to be an optical illusion either, no mind tricks going on as the pattern of the "cupcake ponies" is simply too faint (less than one percent intensity). Most likely taking advantage of some property of the PNG format and I'm quite intrigued of how they managed to create the effect to be honest.

I neeeed to know how they did this

    Sudden answer out of nowhere!

First thing, that's png image. Besides pixels, it contains long forgotten thing like gamma correction. In short, the lower the this gamma correction number, the darker the image, change is not linear. That is, bright dots lose brightness much slowly than dark ones. So by applying slightly brighter image (Pinkie smile) on top of already bright one(Dash and Jack) and then gamma correcting it we should have that applied image (and invitation to a party). Details on Wikipedia and Duckduckgoogle.

Now the fun part. Most tools don't apply gamma correction on stored pixels nor do they copy gamma correction value to the preview png file, so after resizing, gamma is lost. But browsers ( and some viewers like Imagine) do. You can open it Gimp/Photoshop/Irfanview and move gamma value to check it yourself with original file.
