Description

Though the supernatural is far less common in the world of Camp Pines than it once was, it has not entirely disappeared. Far from the artificiality and noise of the cities, in the remote, nigh-untouched areas of the world, spirits can still be sensed, spells wrought, and fae seen.

In a curiously self-reinforcing cycle, these last holdouts from the old world fuel belief in the supernatural in those that glimpse them - and that belief bolsters the spirits and fae, making them even more visible, giving them the strength to survive the cynicism and science of the modern world. Strong enough belief can even still give birth to new fae - like the Jackalope. A uniquely American creature, the Jackalope's legend started in the 1930's with novelty taxidermy combining feral jackrabbits with the antlers of a feral deer. Though tongue-in-cheek and good-humored, the popularity and belief in the creature in the following years was enough to bring the myth into reality.

Whether the Jackalope near Camp Pines is the only one of her kind or simply the local representative of a larger population is unknown. Her slight, teenaged form may be a representation of her relative youth (less than 50 years is quite young for a fairy tale), or a reflection of the activities of the nearby Camp; given her lack of pants, most speculate it's the latter. Often glamoured, she can be difficult to see - motorists driving down the highway might catch a flash of her red pupils and black sclera in the woods. Those with the skill to pierce her magical veil can see her hanging around roadside tourist traps and gas stations, the Jackalope seemingly attracted to those places where her legend was created.

She is most easily seen venturing into town to steal whisky from the local markets - while legend holds that Jackalopes are drawn to whisky, the drink actually short-circuits her glamour, making her visible to even the most casual observer.

  • Jackalopes aren't unique to America; they're known as rasselbock in Germany, where they're found in the Thuringian Forest. They have cousins, the wolpertinger and skvader, both of which are antlered rabbits with wings, the latter adding duck feet to the mix. :D

    That said, yes please more!

  • Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I’d love to see you tidy this up to the same level as all your comic posts; I can barely read the text in this image.

  • Clearly she is a creature of the warp. Enough collective belief or emotion creates the denizens of the immaterium.
