This is supposed to be based on the Twokinds universe, as based on Keirdan biology a "puppy" could indeed turn out to be one... if you miss the thumbs. During the stream during which this was drawn, it was suggested a few times that this would make a good Mini-kind, one of Tom's side comics, like Pixie Panic and The Dragon Masquerade.

The similarity to Freefall is incidental... although the suggestion could have been more inspired by it.

pretty much the same reason I thought this was based on the Freefall universe when I first saw it.

Well, TBH, I think it'd be super cool if they just looked like normal animals when really young, seems to be the case.
