It doesn't; they're identical. This one's filesize is just slightly larger for some reason.

I agree, This just seems to be a pointless re-upload.

  • If you zoom in REALLY close this one has less jpeg artifacts but you have to zoom in super close, at which point the image is too blurry to be of any use to anyone. But very technically this one is better.

  • My mistake; I was comparing the source image with this post's image (which of course would make them identical).

This is indeed the superior version, even if only by a smidge.

    Indeed.
However, this is still clearly objectively superior, so this one is the version we want.

Just think about the facebook memes where you could see gray blocks around black text againts white background. I really don't want that to happen here and this is the first step avoiding that.

Upon closer inspection it seems that the other post was the _1280 version of a tumblr image. It didn't change the image dimensions at all, but it did slightly compress the original image. This post uses the same file that the raw tumblr link gives:

And this is the reason why you should always take the best possible file from websites even if the resolution matches, no matter was it pixiv, inkbunny, tumblr or elsewhere. JPG is lossy format and websites preview generations are automated, so change of file getting resaved regardless is always really high.
