Pretty sure that this is based on a side story in Pokémon mystery dungeon where Dusknoir tries to trick Grovyle the thief and steal his body in the future of darkness to trick the player but doesn't because he became friends with Grovyle and Grovyle did an inspirational speech while having his soul melted
