  • Well if you follow what at least what Volo's guide to monsters says, Kobolds are technically both.
In the book it says that kobolds have a gender split of about 50/50, and if that ratio changes the kobolds are actually able to change their own gender to return the split back to about 50/50.
So according to the book they are kind of like clown fish when it comes to gender.

The more you know. Apparently I should read the lore at some point. It just doesn’t reflect well on a DM to not know stuff about the common species in the world.

Well then you might also like this.
Kobolds according to the book are more likely to bribe advanturers with the raw ores they dig up to leave them alone then to fight them.
It's possible to actually hire a group of kobolds to do the digging for any underground networks you need for a city, just pay them for their service, leave them alone while they do it, and let them live there when they're done, the bonus to that is the kobolds will maintain the systems they've built themselves.
Oh and lastly about 1/4 of all towns have a kobold infestation, they just don't know it, that and the kobolds will only go above ground during the night, and they will take things that won't be missed much liked scraps of metal and leather, so it could be years between sightings of kobolds that live below cities.

Is this pic some sort of statement?

Kobolds are super hard to tell the gender of without looking between the legs. Nil is actually depicted as both genders

Don't forget that they'll always fuck with any gnome residents they find. Kobolds and gnomes have a long standing race rivalry that goes all the way back to their gods.

In Kobolds' defense, Garl Glittergold, the gnome god, did a huge fucking crime against life. He was jealous or feeling like a prankster and acted against the great Kobold city of Darastrixhurthi, and saying it was a city is really undercutting it. It was a NATION of a cave system, it was a fortress fit for dragons, and hosted some parties fit for gods. It could be said that Kobolds were the primary race of the world at the time, and then Garl Glittergold collapsed the entire cave system, killing billions of Kobolds and destroying one of the first fortresses ever. So yeah, kobolds hate gnomes. :p

TLDR: Garl Glittergold the gnome god is hitler, and committed genocide of Kobolds and destroyed their glorious way of life.

Don't their mating cycles also work on a 40 day schedule? Making them one of, if not THE fastest breeding race in the game?

i feel it's important to point out that volo is CONSTANTLY critisized by elminster in his own book, and that much of the lore in the book is only 'real'if the gm says it is. for example, in previous editions of the game kobolds definitely did NOT have this power of gender swapping, since kobold females were quite rare.

the question is if volo made it up! a very fun plothook is to basically hand the players volo's guide, and then subvert their expectations due to the ramblings of a less than stellar researcher. for example, pay the kobolds to mine for you, then get ripped off when they dont do it. or have players obsessed with finding the kobold infestation, only they cant because there isnt one.

I thought Kobolds were from SAO

They are actually from a lot of things, but I think the first ever account of kobolds was as some sort of goblin-like folk monster in some country

name comes from Cobalt, which can be toxic in a poorly ventilated mine, so kobold, cobalt

Kobolds were mischievous spirits that could have represented death in Germany, where the word originated. It comes from the word Cobalt, like the other guy said, because cobalt mines were often fatal to workers who worked in them for a long time, as Cobalt is toxic and can be deadly if inhaled in even medium doses.

Pretty sure it's Volo's Guide to Monsters, there is a section that talks about kobolds in depth.

Other way round, as a matter of fact; the element cobalt is named after kobolds, though it is true that the two were associated. Cobalt ores contain arsenic, which contaminates other elements, and miners supposedly blamed the contamination on evil spirits in the mines. The etymology of 'kobold' itself is uncertain, with a number of competing theories.

depends on the source. I know that pathfinder, taking a lot from dnd, has it so that female kobolds only breed once every 6 years. After they breed, they are able to pop out up to six eggs every couple weeks, until their next breeding season. So... they might be the slowest "breeding" race, but they are a very fast multiplying race.
