I'd think it could be a bad idea in general.

Though, for a snake, it might result in an aftertaste if the material rubs against the Jacobson's organ. But I don't really see how much different it would be from a regular person getting a tongue pierced.

I believe they’re referring to the fact that snakes use their tongues to smell, hence why they flick their tongues out periodically to collect smells in the air.

Yeah, that's correct.
They collect particles of scent with their tongue, and those particles then rub against the Jacobson's organ (located on the palate of their snake's mouth) which then feeds the scent to their brain.
