MemberHow is this effect done that the image file is cropped around the characters?

PrivilegedOr there never was a background to begin with (e.g. if it was done from scratch via computer), pretty much all "more than basic" image editors feature layers and transparency, so you don't actually have to draw onto a substrate like you would with a real canvas (though I guess you could paint on glass/plastic for similar effect). However, if you already have a non-transparent background, e.g. want to cut out an object from an image, then there are usually several ways to do it, most of them much easier than tedious zoomed in cropping, look up a tutorial if interested.

MemberThank you for your elaborate answer and explanation. It's funny to realize that a lot of the people on this site are just normal people and even quite intelligent people like yourself (judging by the grammar and punctuation in your reply).
Chessax
PrivilegedEh, thanks, I try :) and just like in person you're gonna find every kind of people on here, most coming across very average most of the time (absolutely not meaning that in a bad way).
