No, people don't give a shit about the Pentagon, because it's not an enormous double phallic symbol. The main reason people screamed "The towers must be avenged!" is because their destruction meant that the USA was symbolically castrated.

I'm also convinced that Americans would care much less about the ~2600 people who died in the WTC if they'd been killed in a flat building instead.

Actually the reason is quite simple, the pentagon was hit but suffered far less structural damage, and caused far less casualties then the twin towers.

I believe the reason for that is the pentagon was known as a military base while the towers were purely civilian non military buildings just normal skyscrapers
