It's times like this I wonder why Eric became a slave trader.

Family business, and he gets to be around Keidran all day, plus all the sex he can eat.

Cute kids tend to grow up into horny teens, and if no one tells him that slavery's wrong...

Plus if I recall he is a good slave trader.

    Shot in the dark.

He did it to perpetuate good treatment of keidrans and try to do SOME positive work in the world.

Likely out of despising his family for their mistreatment of keidran like Kat.

Considering he thinks of her as family that seems like a logical conclusion to me.

I think you're giving him a bit too much credit. Eric may be comparatively nice to his slaves, but he still sells them to other people and has sex with them without their consent without any seeming pangs of conscience. It's only just recently dawned to him in the comic that he may have been doing something immoral.

Just because he gives Kat special treatment doesn't change the fact that he's been viewing other Keidrans as property for his whole life.

I'm not sure which clip from 12 Years a Slave I wanted to use, so have both.

    True.

But at the same time look at his relationship with his only gamily we've seen. His brother.

It might be that while he may not do pure good he DOES have a choice in clientele.

Also keep in mind that he forced the collar because he suspected them of lying. And it would be VERY bad if that had been the case. He moght have gone a bit too far with it but I think that was the point of the moment: to remind us he still does follow Templar law.

Though if we really are going as far as that moment let's not forget he bought them freedom, gave them seed funding for their new lives, and did the utmost he could to make amends.

Eric, now that I've written this down, may be the most unclear of all the Twokinds characters.

It's a mind rape collar, there is no justification if we want to pretend he is a good guy

But neither I think is he entirely evil.

    He's very complicated.

In a way he makes me think of Legend of the Shield Hero.

  • People are mad because he's too realistic in how he has his rationalizations, even when trying to not be a dick. XD

That saying "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" was an old form of this wisdom. People will rarely think of themselves as evil, and even the emperor's tax collectors (who were barely above slave catchers) can be redeemed. Beware the guy who thinks he can't possibly do any wrong... Therein lies narcissism.
