Umm... The reason why the red dragon isn't fighting the gold ones is because the red is a male and the gold are females.

So, why fight them when you can mate with them.

well there is the fact that their alignments are polar oposites (gold are lawful good and red are chaotic evil)and golds tend to have the palidan like attitude of "hey you evil so im going to kill you" but considering the crazy ass number of magiv items in d&D i suspect the red has them either mind controled of some how tricked into thinking he's a gold as well
