The word you're looking for is "desert". I've spent an entire day driving through one before. I promise you, it actually does look like that a lot of the time.

Knew a big guy, like 220-240lb (100-110kg) of solid muscle, who went to a concert once not knowing what mosh pits where. When someone shoved into him he shoved the guy back twice as hard and sent him flying. Later he really got into the mosh pits since it was an excuse to knock people around. A mutual friend who was tiny, like 110-120lb (around 55kg) used to love mosh pits too but she always looked like a prius that went to a demolition derby after a few minutes.
