    Well, he didn't particularly care for them either, but yeah, he didn't used to hate them back when his wife was alive.

    It was also implied in an older page that he was somehow controlled or corrupted into acting like that so he would be a puppet for someone trying to use him.

    And Laura's backstory revealed that it was mostly the wolves he hated, since even after he had gone into his Keidran-hating self he spared her and let her go when he attacked the wolf slavers that were holding her captive.

    Yeah, “corrupted” is probably the right word. His use of black mana when trying to save Saria or bring her back to life is what really messed him up. It makes people much less sane, so Trace easily became a genocidial maniac.
