And this is why you can't use a longbow with a small character in DnD 5e. It's a heavy weapon for this reason. There use to also be a strength requirement (dont' quote me on that).

You might be thinking of Composite Bows, which added your Strength modifier to damage delt.

Depends on the edition. In fifth edition, for example, there are only two bows besides crossbows, shortbows and longbows.
