Description

"Why Not?"
The answer to the last panel is 'Yes. Yes there is.'

Sketch of the 1089th page of TwoKinds.

Transcript

Maren: What?! Don’t make jokes like that!

Sythe: I’m not joking. Why not?

Maren: Why not?! Because you’re a wolf, idiot!

Maren: We’re different species!

Sythe: So? Doesn’t seem to have stopped our ex’s any.

Sythe: And if it’s good enough for the Grand Templar…

Maren: No, no, no! The whole world might be turning upside down, but I’m not going along with it!

Sythe: Okay! Okay! Fair enough.

Sythe: If you don’t want it, that’s fine!

Maren: Why would you even want a relationship? Aren’t humans… disgusting to you?

Sythe: Oh, come on, Maren. Fur or not, you’re anything but disgusting. And it wouldn’t be something so serious as a relationship. Just a way to, you know, feel things out. Satisfy curiosity.

Sythe: I thought you might be curious too, but maybe not. It’s cool. Don’t worry about it.

Maren: …I… I need to get a drink.

Sythe: Oh, okay, sure. There’s a table down by the beach.

Maren: …Is there one in your room?

  • That... Is a bit different phrasing from one way I expected this to go down.

That said a sailing ship is a sailing ship.

  • I was legitimately surprised Tom didn't do his classic mid-dramatic moment focus switch, but I doubt we're going to see this go anywhere on the next page, which blows because I really support this ship.

We got the sketch of Mrs. Nibbly looking at Maren with hatred a few days ago, and now in this page you can see her tail sticking out from the pillar she was hiding behind in the sketch. Two-to-one odds she's going to jump out and cause some commotion, maybe even revealing her subtly-hinted at dragon nature, and the trip back to the room goes by the wayside.

  • I’m shocked to see the story take this sudden swerve. Fan service and Patreon sketches, sure. But this is wild to me coming from the official story.

The image with Nibbly looking on was a patreon request, and thus shouldn't be considered canon. In fact. most of the Nibbly/Maren rivalry is stuff imagined and requested by Tom's patrons, so none of it is canon. The tail poking behind the pillar was likely just an easter egg.

And then those masked people from a pages ago gonna ruin it, and no drinks will happen :(

Guys I don't wanna be a doomer but this fella might be right, they're likely gonna run into them while going to the room or something...

The thing is, things that have shown up in his Patreon sketches have a way of occasionally ending up in the canon comic. Sometimes it's sketches he's come up with himself, sometimes it's suggestions. But there's been too many times that they've become canon in one way or another to dismiss it.

See: Mrs. Nibbly actually being a dragon. Fans speculated that was what she actually was. Then that same discussion appeared in the comic, followed up by some sketches joking about it, then back in the comic with her apparently dying before miraculously coming back to life (and Raine commenting on her being odd) and finally we get a reveal when Sythe walks past the waterfall in this room; Mrs. Nibbly's reflection shows what looks VERY MUCH like a dragon tail.

Tom likes teasing. Why is why I was SUPER surprised this page even exists. I totally expected Maren to get upset and Sythe just play it off like a joke, similar to how Keith/Natani's relationship went for 10+ frigging years.

I'm thinking part of his writing process is derived directly from the readerbase.

And what scene were you talking about eith a dragon tail?

Yeah, I get the impression he pulls stuff from readers, too. And I think the whole Nibbs is a dragon thing is a perfect example.

Look at Nibbly's reflection in the waterfall. The tail is subtlety different and continues on past where the squirrel tail does. And looks distinctly... reptilian. That panel is framed to draw attention to the reflection. It's not a coincidence.

I think the "Nibbly is a dragon" is a concept that is waay overhyped by the fanbase. Almost all of the "dragon nibbly" stuff is from Patreon requests, the same kind od requests that had keidran nibbly. I don't think we should ever consider anything canon or serious until it happens on the comic itself. Tom makes very clear that he will not draw spoiler content for Patreon, so is safe to assume most of the patreon requests are just non canon ideas. In the main comic itself we have never seen Nibbly hold that kind of hostility torwards Maren, and the angry Nibbly drawing wasn't Tom's idea at all.

To be fair, Tom definitely tends to drop hints with his patreon stuff. Nibbly is definitely close to Sythe and a lot smarter than the average squirrel (I'm not on team dragon Nibbly quite yet though since her being a familiar of the seer girl still seems more likely), Maren has a definite soft spot growing for the mangy wolf (likely since around the time she brushed him at the hot spring), and when specific details of a character's past get a picture I get the feeling he's not doing it as something to be thrown away.

However this works out, I don't really care. All I know is that there is a huge possibility of more SytheXMaren sketches to come out, and thats fine by me.

Even though it is annoying, you gotta hand it to Tom. That strategy of cutting off a plotline and switching to another one makes it so that his readers are contantly tuning in to see where said plotline ends up, making it so that we are constantly itching for the next page. Keeps his audience on the edge of their seat.

Oh I am sure Nibbly is more than just a squirrel. If not something dragon related then some kind of shapeshifter like Wil' o Wisp. But what I mean is that during the comic itself Nibbly has never shown to hate Maren, or to have -romantic- feelings for Sythe. The whole love triangle is solely based on patreon requests that have zero canon content. Nibbly clearly cares for Sythe and the others, but atm she has only done so in a purely animal fashion.

Again, things from his Patreon sketches do tend to occasionally show up in the comic, and if he does (and I firmly believe this is the case) he gets ideas from readers/Patreons, then dragon Nibbs isn't that far-fetched. Especially given he put that reptilian-like tail in the page I linked. The very fact that he had *the characters themselves* speculating on it is a huge lampshade on the whole thing.

Remember, comic artists don't always have the entire story and details plotted out years or even months in advance, they often make things up on a page-by-page basis. He's taken other things from readers comments before, I don't see why this is any different.

You know I just remembered Roselyn knows everything that goes on in this house.

    EVERYTHING.

Maybe she's a closet perv? And a wall perv, and a door perv... (puns!)

Anyway, she's obviously not left the house for ages, and from what we can infer she's been alone since Trace lost his memories (she *did* explicitly mention taking care of the manor by herself), so maybe she'd enjoy peeping in or something?

Even if she turns out to be draconic in nature, the comic itself has never shown Nibbly to hate Maren, or to have romantic feelings for Sythe. So far Nibbly is only an (albeit smart) animal. The whole "Nibly loves Sythe and hates Maren" is just fan requested/voted stuff. Is like the Maddie/Maeve shipping. It has zero canon content and Tom himself has mentioned hi is not a huge fan of it. Not because it has been drawn a lot it means it is going to be part of the comic.

Or they just hog the spotlight and after that's dealt with we get Maren and Sythe wandering in, wondering what they missed.
