does work and looks the same as this "format=png&name=4096x4096" version, but I can't do a boolean compare to know for sure. If this png is just the "format=jpg&name=orig" version with an unnecessarily bloated file size, the latter would be preferred.

Twitter does sometimes, though it's specific circumstances. Like, the file in question needs to be both under 256 colors and fit the resolution max of twitter if I remember correctly otherwise site converts file to jpg.
