Without a drastic change in story that would make no sense, she COULDN'T die in that situation. She is RETELLING the events, remember? Besides, you can't say

Some film noir pics have the narrator already dead telling their story. Maybe the people she were talking to were some other form of judgement than the mundane kind. Highly unlikely, but it could have been.

a few things. they have proven themselves to have the ability to make robots with the capability to make robots with humanlike intelligence, i wouldn't be surprised if they could interface with the dying/recently deceased and she might not be dead but disabled she could be retelling it to a detective
