Btw Notkastar, if you want to upload better quality and with alpha channel to Twitter, you can reduce the amount of colors at which point twitter doesn't make it a JPG.

One easy way is to download pingo GUI for Windows, select lossy - strong (palette) and extreme compression, drop the file on the window and click Optimize. This will result slight downgrade in quality and will overwrite the file, so make copy of the file and upload that only to twitter. Also if you already know other software which can apply palette of course you can use those as well, but for static images, I know at least GIMP doesn't do as great as Pingo does.

Just try it, no more visible compression around edges and no more pure white background.
